What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I have my offer discussion call with Epic recruiter in couple of hours and Capital one later this week. I'd appreciate you sharing your TC breakdown. These are extra data points to go with levels.fyi Epic Role: Software Engineer 1 Epic Location: Madison, WI Capital one Role: Software Engineer Capital one Location: Chicago, IL YOE: 9 months fulltime + 2 years internships (Faang and other companies) Degree: MS & BS CompE #EpicSystems #capitalone #softwareengineer #softwareengineersalary
Is that new grad? It’s pretty standard for that. Add 5k to previous year
No these are regular swe positions not categorized as new grad (Even though I count as one)
Epic won't negotiate on salary, though recently they've started offering free stock to the compensation package for new devs. Madison is a nice little city and much lower CoL compared to Chicago. Note that Epic permits zero WFH, and has sub-par vacation and 401k compared to rest of industry. Though health insurance is phenomenal.
Thank you very much for the insight!
Epic is an excellent place to take a tour for taking photos. But don't work there unless you want to get stuck in Madison/Verona for 10 years.
Yeah I believe I'll go with Capital One for now
Capital One you are likely to get 110k-120k depending on location. Very good 401k plan, decent insurance. WLB is generally pretty good for *most*. Some teams are 50hr/wks. Quality of work in general is poor - most teams are not working on particularly interesting projects in my experience, and our codebase quality has not been the best in my experience. That being said, if you join planning to stay a year or two, i think it’s not bad. They’ll pay for you to get your AWS cert, and it’s a decent jumping off point to larger companies. Also not bad if you are not work motivated and just wanna find a chill team to coast to retirement on. Feel free to DM if you have questions about cap1, but you’ll know more than me about our offers after your call (we got a market adjustment in july and there are rumors of another at the end of the year)
You currently work at Amazon, and you’re considering switching to Epic?
I interned at Amazon before. I currently work at Raytheon Technologies.
How come you didn’t return to Amazon?
If I die tomorrow, my last wish would be you choosing Cap 1.
I think I am going to Amazon
Stay away from Epic…thank me later
Great start! I am leaning more towards capital one. Thanks for sharing but would you mind sharing what you dislike about them? Feel free to message me if you'd like.
There's a ton to dislike - upper management is abysmal (see glassdoor reviews - sort by recent), the tech stack is an abomination, and the engineering culture is awful. Comp is meh starting out (but might beat Capital One) and becomes very bad the longer you stay. That being said it's a GREAT springboard to better companies--I got contacted by FAAG+ recruiters (no N), offers at all, and declined for a better offer at a smaller company. The sooner you GTFO the better though; long term Epic is a horrible employer. Short term (<2 yrs) it was a good one - I've heard very bad things from friends still there that are looking to leave so that might not be the case, but there are so many incompetent employees you can work <20hrs/wk and focus on getting a better job elsewhere!
