Oh thats sad to know. I was told by hr and others that they have data scientists who write ML algos. And whats the pay they offer for data engineers. It might be lesser than SW dev right?
My departments ML platform team's are in Singapore. Data scientists are in Montreal, a few in Chicago. I'm technically a data engineer but come from a SW full stack background so my pay is on par with Expedia SW. Expedia is not a technology company. Might as well work as a SW at Starbucks or Macy's. Not hating on those companies, just need to adjust expectations.
That makes sense. One good thing is they are paying you on par with SW devs at expedia for the role of a data engineer (considering ur full stack background)
As a data engineer, do u get to work on full stack application or is it more/only on data engineer related work.
Ok thanks for the info. Will pm you

Don't join the data team. They hire bi developers who only know SQL. It's was okay bc most of the data processing was done through hadoop and SQL queries but after moving to spark, it's clear these bi devs can't write code for shit. We also don't have data scientists, just data analysts. There are no algos, just analysts aggregating data for "reports".
I totally agree with this, I’m fairly new on the team and am feeling very uninspired by the team. Nobody seems to be making effort to learn how to code.
