Earning report looks solid for both. Mastercard has made a lot of Acquisitions recently and ceo mentioned of inflation pitch and their debt to equity does not seem good. If you are looking for stability in a recession, choose Mastercard. Travel is a discretionary expense. Many people turn to their credit cards to stay afloat in a downturn.
Mastercard is definitely the stable one. It has lot of contracting vendors that go first, before they land on the employees. By this time, half of Expedia would have gone in a downturn
I heard rumors that they replace fte with consultants. Like Mastercard has contractors but also a different category called consultants. But what you said makes sense. You hire contract sde and cut them before touching fte
If your decision is based on job security, then I’d pick Mastercard. Expedia is exposed as it is subject to discretionary consumer spending which can be challenging during a recession. Mastercard is an oligarch and the rails on which the world’s money moves.
Stay away from Expedia. During recession they survive on a quarter by quarter basis.
Which SDE level for Expedia?
Choose Expedia. The work is more interesting and can get you long term gain. The company went through the worst in pandemic and emerged stronger. The worst for travel has passed. Expedia survived many recessions and can survive a few more. Most importantly the challenges at Expedia if you solve them will look better on your resume

It is hard to say about Job Security in these difficult times but both companies have proved themselves strongly in previous difficulties. Could not comment on Mastercard but surely give pointers on Expedia. 1. 2020 Layoffs were purely Performance basis, as the Company was not able to fulfil the targets they aimed. 2. Leadership got deteriorated badly due to The Great Attrition Times. 3. We have seen too much draining of good talent from our teams and recruitment of Average Employees since last year, who mugged up DS/Algo to just crack interviews. 4. Expedia has strong goals and Aimed really strong Roadmap for a Company as a whole(doesn't know how much would be fulfilled) 5. You will not get Work-life Balance better than Expedia anywhere else(personal opinion) 6. Decent Raises(for good performers) 7. Expedia MIGHT not come to the extent of layoffs as they could wait for one month with enough people leaving the company. Hope this would help
