Banging my head! Suggestions please! Expedia-SDE1-Chicago: I like my work and team (Expedia Hotel Search Engine). Plus one for Tech-Stack(Java based) and adapting new technologies. Great stuff and learning experience as well. Not too stressful. Leading epics and driving new initiatives. On my path to leadership (My manager really like my approach and idea. I tend to be coy and he pushes me). Before COVID-19, one day WFH on weekly basis rule. Flexible to pursue other activities. Chicago Downtown job with great commute and transportation Comp: 95K base MS-L60-Redmond: Azure. It’s fully operations, I am assuming stuff even before joining though. The team is brand new. Startup kind of work. I don’t like c# :(. Other than the language, the framework and tools are all MS based so I will be cut out from new tools and technology. I need to start fresh with the technology and then start driving my career.(I already have 3+ year experience before coming for Masters) Bad commute (I don’t know driving). Only good thing, good pay! Moreover, I don’t have want to settle down in Seattle. Switching team in MS is darn painful. Comp: 120K + 30K + 75K(stock) 4 years The only reason I interviewed with MS or perse other companies is bcoz all my friends are form FAANG club. Given the recent layoff in MS and Linkedln, I am not sure if switching is the best choice for me especially when I am on visa here. #offer #tech #microsoft #expediagroup
Also factor in the uncertainty around travel. Both roles have lay off risk.....
You aren't shut out from using other non-Microsoft tools just because your team uses C#. They are almost certainly using .NET Core if it's a new team. Also the MS "layoffs" happen every year as SLT shifts focus on different products and orgs. They weren't due to COVID.
Microsoft layoffs is very small compared to other tech companies
MSFT is probably the safest place to be. Not sure about visa implications though.
Microsoft culture is very team specific. Get to know some more insights upon team and work before making a decision on msft. I agree whatever you said about msft makes sense and add in sporadic tasks assignment, bureaucratic, politics, stack ranking and burn down.
You can get into Microsoft and look for an internal transfer, if you don’t like this role but want to badly move. Expedia needs to deal with a lot of uncertainty in the next two quarters; the first thing any company will do is reduce the headcount.
You can always move back to Chicago/anywhere after gaining few years of experience at MS. It would be a nice value add to resume and an opportunity to work on products at bigger scale. Also, try to be framework/language agnostic earlier in your career. That can really help down the road. All things can be learned with little effort. Having worked for 15y in different stacks, it all feels same ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What did you end up doing?
There’s no M in FAANG
Lol..i also mentioned I interview with other companies as well
