I know someone who works for Tencent. Working till 3am is a weekly occurrence. They pull all nighters a few times a year. Once you calculate the per-hour wage, it's not that good. I'd probably rather just fix computers at the local PC shop.
No, entry level dev pay in China is around 15k USD. Probably 20% what you earn in US (75k in some Midwest small companies). Only a few top employers pay higher for some good candidates (Tencent, Bytedance etc). Zoom, for instance, built their development center in Hefei, a third tier city. They pay 1000 ~ 3000 USD per month. And tier 1 city is significantly more expensive than Bay Area if you want American living standards. For instance, you can still eat cheap egg and drink milk in China. But if you want organic eggs and fresh milk, that’s going to be much more expensive.
Not sure about junior developers, but my friend just got an offer at the BAT for more than 1.1M RMB (not including bonus), 650k base and more than 2M in stocks vested across 4 years. And this is definitely on the lower end given the person is in DS, not a developer. I think it really comes down to 1) are you chinese? If not just don’t go, you will not survive and 2) if you are chinese, what’s your job growth in China vs the US, most asians if not all asians have glass ceilings the day they start their career, so is it worth the extra 5-8 years to get a green card and be stuck at senior whatever or would you go back to China, suck it up then get promoted to beyond manager. Because money post manager in China is HUGE. The opportunity cost is really money and career growth vs wlb and green card
True, it is opportunity cost. I got 100+ class mates in my class in college. About 5 of them worth more than 100 million RMB now, and rest are significantly poorer than me. I think younger people don’t even have our opportunity any more.
No 996 for foreign companies
With 996 where is the time for 69
What’s wrong with 996? Isn’t US worse? I had a girlfriend used to work in IBD in Merrill Lynch and that was 10-2-7
