I have worked at multiple FAANGs and non-FAANGs. They are just companies ffs. You can do interesting and boring stuff at either. I really don’t get why Blind is so obsessed with FAANGs and putting these companies up on a pedestal? Is it a real thing or are people just going with flow like the Albertsons meme from a couple of years ago? If it is real, I wonder if these are mainly kids right out of college who still try to compare companies (and their supposed rankings) with colleges and their admission criteria.
At non FANG i kept hearing complaints about how they couldn't get into FANG. Not very fun working with folks that are just there because they failed every other interview. I've even interviewed at non FANG and been asked why on earth I'm interested in that company and not the FANGs in the same city. Grass isn't greener but at least you don't get this shitty attitude at FANG.
I'm coming from the enterprise world and about to start at Google. Honestly, part of the appeal is being able to tell people I work at Google. I mean, it's a great company, but it's nice to have the gold plating of "I accomplished something." My family and most other people won't know what Okta is for instance even though I'm sure it's fine.
I’ve worked at non-Faangs (I.E. Tesla, Cruise, AMD) where people are there because they liked the company and weren’t Faang rejects. We were compensated well and I worked with lot of bright people.
Actually people see it as status symbol to show to soceity . Nothing else Open minded person don't give a fuck to faang
It's a resume boost for sure. Also more $$$. Status is a lame reason i agree but it goes hand in hand with resume boost.
I think it’s kind of pathetic if one treats FANNG as status symbol....
Dude the impact. Whatever feature you work on at a FANG will be experience by millions of people, even if it’s buried in the UI. You can’t access that level of impact at a non FANG
I'd argue that you can make more of an impact on everyday people at a non-FAANG company than at one of the FAANGs (maybe except Netflix). There's large scope projects in companies like Airbnb, Square, Twitter, Pinterest, etc which affects millions of users.
Every company that you mentioned that is not exactly FAANG is FAANG. Those are all FAANG like companies lol
I agree it’s mostly a status symbol but still valuable. Having Google on my LinkedIn got me tons of recruiters reaching out from companies I applied to before but never even heard back from.
Basically prestige and TC. The marketing works in favor of those already at FAANG to make everyone believe they are a 10x ninja rockstar. Working at a FAANG then increases their own marketability and helps negotiate higher TC when they jump.
What prestige? And who exactly is supposed to get impressed?
People that aren't at FAANG obviously 🙃 they are the ones this is marketed to. You asked why people are obsessed with working at FAANG, the answer is because the industry, media and fellow engineers perpetuate the myth. It's an artificial status symbol that benefits the ruling class within tech.
As others said, brand on the resume does matter.
In addition to the points made, I think it's also working with the sheer scale you normally won't work with in smaller companies, different challenges with maybe the same bs
You've worked at FAANGS and non-FAANGS, but have you ever worked for a company that teaches you 0 relevant experience, impresses 0 recruiters, and provides you no opportunity for growth, mobility, etc? Most people work like that.
Ok - but my point is that it’s not just FAANGs that offer that experience.
For one thing, FAANG offers you name recognition you don't get other places. When you say FAANG do you specifically mean F,A,A,N,G? When I say I want to get into FAANG what I really mean is get into a top tech company.
I want to work at FAANG! But not at Amazon, Netflix or Facebook. And not so much at Apple either.
So basically you want to never be promoted while working on a product that will be thrown away aka join Google? 😉
I do :(

I think most obsessions are associated with the TCs/benefits in these companies. Since you would almost certainly get quite good compensations in these firms. Also people tend to be obsessed with FAANGs if they’ve never been in one. Once you get into one you be like “yeah.... ok.... Not much difference...” 🤣🤣
I'm not even in a real FAANG according to blind, and there is a huge difference in my experience. Have you ever worked at a mom and pop shop or even a fortune 500 company just getting into software? If you're comparing FAANG to Uber, lyft, etc sure probably not a huge difference.
Most faang companies don’t even have that great of a TC. Their stock is stable and don’t have much of an upside. My friend at google is getting much lower pay than some of the newly ipo companies.
