"In a move that illustrates how swiftly the COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping the global economy, Facebook said today that it would begin allowing most of its employees to request a permanent change in their jobs to let them work remotely. The company will begin today by making most of its US job openings eligible for remote hires and begin taking applications for permanent remote work among its workforce later this year." https://www.theverge.com/facebook/2020/5/21/21265699/facebook-remote-work-shift-workforce-permanent-covid-19-mark-zuckerberg-interview #wfh #facebook #faang #tech
How’s Bay area real estate doing?
Fucked for good haha
Rip to anyone that owns real estate. Basically going to be today's NYC taxi medallion
This is excellent. I have a nice house in bay but an hour commute. If I can save 2 hours a day so I have more energy (sleep more) in the morning and spend more time with kids in the evening I don’t have to move closer to the office anymore! (I was saving anther million to move closer.)
Are you in FB, I think I will definitely buy a cheaper house in remote area
I think there’s going to be a trend that starts of homes being built and purchased all along the coast of California
I wonder how this impacts offers and TC
Down down down
"But I think that it’s possible that over the next five to 10 years — maybe closer to 10 than five, but somewhere in that range — I think we could get to about half of the company working remotely permanently.” About half the company working remotely in ~8 years is not THAT big of a deal i feel like. Thats a long way away so they can change their mind at any time. "But after surveying employees and talking with executives at other companies built on remote employees, Zuckerberg said he became persuaded of the benefits of a more distributed workforce. The move will open up Facebook jobs to a much wider pool of applicants" This is the end goal for companies. Massively increase the applicant pool to drive down salaries. Pay a quality SWE in Mumbai $50k instead of $150k in USA. Or if they still just want USA people, pay $80k in Kansas instead of $150k in SF. People in high CoL areas will be forced to move because companies wont pay them enough to live there since there are so many cheaper people elsewhere.
Is it possible to work from home country too?
Doubtful. That would throw off the timezones
But what if you could manage working on an odd timezone?
How will this affect team collaboration especially in structured meetings in the hallway etx
Why do Indians always have meetings in the hallway. Lol
Why are people from Wipro (fake resume H1bs) even allowed in this conversation?
Does it mean it will start to hire cheaper force outside US?
Yes.. Uber is doing that
Not if they dont want trump coming down on their ass they won’t
Lol Google is soooo screwed if they don’t announce this too soon
Google might not want to jump guns. What’s the incentive for google for this kinda announcement? They will get top talent nevertheless
Why do you think this is good thing for single?
Does it mean free food era is over?
Along with sleeping in the parking lot
Wait was sleeping in the parking lot ever a thing?
Time to move to the beach 😎
Awesome shift. If productivity can stay high, it saves costs for them, adds flex for employees.
There is no cost saving
@brrrrrrr Offices are expensive
