I currently work at Amazon as a DE. I make $170k in Seattle. My manager told me I'd get TT this year, like I did last year. Is it worth moving over to FB for a similar role? Amazon is a chaotic mess but I'd be surprised if FB is any better.
Facebook is worse but you get paid more for it.
Can you expand on this?
The DE role at Amazon is a joke. It has not kept up with the industry. The rest of the industry recognizes that it's a software engineer role with specific domain knowledge. Amazon is stuck in the Oracle-based past. If you get an offer for DE at Facebook, you take it.
Facebook is the worst place for any DE. Quality of work you do is low and there is no respect. At Amazon DE’s do system design and are way more respected than Facebook. However, TC is better at FB.
Hi, can you elaborate on this? In what way is quality of work low?
Not necessarily true at Amazon. Lots of DEs doing BA/BI work.
What is the breakdown of the TC ? and what is yoe ? I also partially agree that we used to do stupid oracle job failure restart most of the time and wrote ETL in SQL. Now I DE tech-depth is moving more toward NAWS and some orgs have that as a goal actually. It depends on team though.
What is TT
Top tier
I would say work is team dependent on both the places. But most of things won’t be used in native way when it comes to orchestration. If you wanna have fun as a DE. Go to startup and use Apache airflow 😍 For data warehouse snowflake 🥰
Im curious, are you being sarcastic here or do you actually like airflow and snowflake? If you were being sarcastic I would be interested in knowing your perspective as to why.
