FB Portal. How’s the team?
Interested in finding out from people working at FB. How is the portal team? Does the product have a future? Confused whether or not I should interview for that team specifically or interview for a generic software engineer role.
I don’t think they’re planning to do that. From what I remember they were planning to add support for Alexa and Assistant. If they do plan to compete with them that would just be plain stupid and an incredible waste of resources.
Just as a consumer product, I dont see any particular value that portal ads compared to products already in the market. Plus, I would be really skeptical to willingly allow a FB device to be constantly listening for a keyword. I'll pass. Buuut the oculus go, I'll buy something like that fo sure.

With all the negative publicity for FB a device like Portal isn’t going to do very well IMHO. You have Google and Echo already in this space to make video calls, the follow me feature of Portal while on a call is easily copyable. If you’re going to buy Portal to use Alexa, might as well get Echo. There was also a recent report of FB employees who worked on Portal give good reviews on Amazon and get it 4.5 star rating, lol. Unless you hear something specific about the future direction they are headed to with expansion plans to other device categories or integrations; I’m not convinced. P.S the org is run by a bunch of mercenaries who will throw you under the bus if you are not part of “the gang”.. ex Google Ara and Lab126 folks there..

In for the answer as well. I think the portal is a neat product but I dont know how well it's selling.
From an engineering perspective it’s definitely an interesting product. From a consumers perspective I’m not sure I would want a fb camera at home.
Yea FB has that stigma but it's a product that has potential to have a positive impact on society.
