What is the average total comp for senior/principal engineers at FB/Google here in Seattle?
From what I've seen directors and sr directors at eBay usually don't come in as directors at fb.
fb/goog principal engineer comp should be at least 700k-800k
Sounds right, but I would not be surprised of it is more. Theres E6 (fb) engineers bringing home 600k a year. Right below director is E7, which is a huge step above E6.
uncalibrat, did those E6's get stock before Facebook's stock went up? You have to take that into account.
what are the levels at FB? Someone that has 10 yrs of experience between Microsoft and eBay, what level would they be recruited at?
Again depends. We gave old people and young people in the same levels. But sounds like Somewhere around E5 which is a few levels below director. I think there's another post on E5 comp. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head but it should be there.
One level below director is e7 I guess?
e5 for sure with 300k compensation..
Just fyi for terms at Google L5: senior L6: staff L7: senior staff L8: principal L9: distinguished
So principal at Google is completely different than principal at Microsoft. Here it goes senior - principal - partner - distinguished engineer
For added color only 6% of all SWEs are L7 or above. So Principal at Google is a BFD. When someone gets promoted to Principal it goes out as part of an all-company email.
Stupid question from a young naive intern. Do such successful engineers usually have graduate degree (MS/PhD) or do you think there's no such correlation and it comes down to raw ability and impact?
from what I've seen they are uncorrelated. i certainly know more L7 without phd than with PhD.
What does a principal engineer map to?
don't know FB levels, but I'd say 1 level below a director
What does director map too? Director means different things. At some companies it's more like mid level manager. At other companies they have the ability to hand out equity. I don't mean to be intentionally difficult but I honestly don't know what your frame of reference is.
