I relocated to Europe and FIREd myself with 5M. Today my 6yo (1st grade) asked me what I do for a living and I was not ready for it... Will my kid grow up thinking that he doesn't have to work in life? Parenting Philosophy: I will provide my kid with all the opportunities that I can provide (e.g. financial support, master in the us, etc...). However, his life is up to him and I will never ever maintain him.
You work in personal finance consulting with heavy data background.
Should I lie? It won't last long. Other parents will figure out the bluff at some point. How do I explain not doing anything at home? Or taking long vacations in the summer?
I don't know, I feel like a lot of folks just talk about being a consultant and they can get by years without neighbors and such really knowing.
My parents retired at 48. I am 40 and have no plans to retire anytime soon, although will leave tech at 50 and focus on something else. If you instill a great work ethic and not raise entitled kids, you will be fine.
How did they instill a work ethic on you without providing the example themselves?
How you work on other difficult things - house projects, volunteering, hobbies etc
You're a "consultant" and/or "investor"
Investing in the kid.
Sorry, but you’re going to have to do SOMETHING if you want to instill work ethic in your kids. Spend as much time as you would working volunteering, writing, teaching etc… preaching hard work when its not something you can see is futile. I grew up with many kids of immigrants and there’s a big difference in perspective between those whose parents stopped working and those whose parents had to work their entire childhood. Those who grew up comfy and only told stories of “how we got here” view success as a given and entitled, they never saw how the real toil of hard work.
There’s research about kids mirror what parents do instead of what they say. This worries me too if I choose to fire. I think I’ll just keep working in some capacity and ramp up spending.
How old are you OP? I'm 30 and thinking I'll reach my target in 5 years.
Do something useful that your kids can look up to. I’d feel so useless if I full FIRE. CoastFIRE is the right move
Imma disagree with most of the comments here. I don't think your kid will grow up to be a slacker just because they're seeing that you don't go to a job. My parents were workaholics and neglectful, and they thought that they would instill work ethic by setting an " example". It doesn't work like that. You need to understand your child as a person. Figure out what they like and dislike. Coach them to their strengths. In fact, they're really privileged that they have parents who have a lot of time and money on their hands to get to know them, and also to nurture their talent. Teach them how to budget, how to master a skill, and do homework with them.
Well there's still a difference between a present but working parent and a present parent who doesn't work at all.
I am guessing that just because op is not working doesn't mean they're doing literally no work. They're probably involved in household chores and parenting, which can be quite time consuming. Being a home maker is a full time job.
EZ - work out and say you are an online fitness coach.
Send him to a boarding school and train him like a pitbull on rugby, cookie jerking, women, and math, then debate club and interval training

Who are these retards asking for dictatorship in India?
Whoa I never considered that. I am also in the FIRE movement and just had a kid. After reflecting a lil on your question, I think you can explain how much you’ve saved which is a great skill you want your kids to also learn and practice. Then perhaps you can explain what you did, how you wanted money, made investments and set yourself up for life.
Is huawei present in the US?
Yes, for years
