I'm planning to FIRE. Current NW is 3M, age 35. At 4% withdrawal this would allow yearly spend of 120k. I have an idea to greatly bump this up by working just 1 month a year: Every year, just interview and get a sign on bonus, put it all towards 401k, also get the company to 401k match. Negotiate the offer so that it is sign on bonus heavy. Quit soon after. Most places will not claw back. Even if they do, you'll get to keep the salary for that month, part of the bonus and the 401k match. Your tax rate will also be much lower than whatever it is now because of the reduced yearly income. Also use that month to squeeze out any company perks and discounts. If you do this in the Dec-Jan period, you can max out both years 401k and employer matches in one shot. If this overlaps with me having a baby, I can even go on paternity leave for 5 months. I think this can net another 100k/year. I think if I rejoin Google every year, I don't even have to interview? Cons: You'd have to keep leetcode skills sharp. But this is pretty easy for some of us. I don't need much practice. Reputation. But I think this is easily managed by cycling between some tier 2 companies. Also new companies keep popping up like Roblox, snowflake, etc Resume gaps. I only want to do this for maybe 4 or 5 years. I don't think it will be too hard TC: 400k #tech #misc
Sign on bonus is prorated over one year, leave after one month and you will get 1/12th.
You forgot to consider inflation. It will keep it. Don’t believe in government stats
No one will hire you with a resume like that.
I'm not going to put these short stints on my resume. I can just make up a startup and say I was self employed.
Very Googly
3M is good money to quit and just do put sells with it, can easily make 300k without “ANY” risk on it. I can manage your portfolio for life if you dont know how to do it.
300k no risk I’m in!
Teach me how to get 10% return no risk
Lol. Those gaps and backround checks would be resume poison
Lol this is so messy I would rather spend extra five years working a real job and doing something meaningful. Besides, you have enough to live comfortably as it is, why bother with this scheming?
Net worth is quite confusing do you have any debt ? Are 3M in purely assets (cash and stocks) ? No mortgage ?
Why not you just one hour a day?
Work one hour a day
Instead of working on IT, you can do something you passionate about and make money
Why don't you just work for another year and then quit for good. Much better than the annual hassle.
That is 12 months of work for just 200k post tax. With what I'm proposing, I can get close to a million with the same 12 months of work spread out over a decade.
Lol 😂 this is better.
