Is it worth joining Merck?

My friend (PhD, 3rd year, R1) has an offer from Merck and wants to know if it's still worth joining since no housing or health insurance is provided. Offer: Merck, Research Intern (Rahway, New Jersey), ~$8k monthly, no health insurance, six months. Edit 1: They are still actively applying and awaiting results, so deciding in favor is not the obvious choice.
