I need help deciding what job to pick. I love finance and I want to work in the finTech space. I have a lot more front end experience than backend. Im currently trying to decide which offer to accept. I really do enjoy working at growth stage start ups Note: I already turned down a down paying me $140k because I knew I would get very bored of the product very very quickly and starting hating my job like I do right now. Important info: My goal is to learn as much as I can and start my own startup in a few years, I’ve worked at 2 startups already before moving to the big company that I am at right now. I wanted to get back into the startup scene so I can learn more about running startups but idk if working at one as a dev will really help me do that. Current comp break down: $95k base + 5% bonus + $14k/year stock TC: $114k YoE: 2 Newton: - 4 years old - 30 engineers - 400k users and expanding into the US this year. So my job would be to working on that project as a Full Stack Software Engineer - I use the product everyday - lots and lots of room for growth and leadership. Quick pay raises - company valued at $250 million - I accepted this job offer a few weeks ago. - TC: 120k base + $5k signing bonus (haven’t been assigned options yet because they just finished fund raising, so my contract says TBD) - I could prolly get a pay raise to $140k by the end of the year tbh - options vesting schedule 10%, 20%, 35%, 35% (idk how I feel about this) Shopify: - I would be on the Shop Pay team as Mobile Engineer. - Team size 4 - Shop Pay operates as a startup inside shopify, so there’s currently about 60 engineers. So we get the benefits of operating like a startup with the resources of Shopify. - TC: $142k ($110k base) - Shopify stock is really down so if it rises by 25% that’ll put my TC at like $162k I need help deciding what to do because I wanna learn as much as possible because I’m Still early in my career but I have a goal I want to get to. #engineering #software #swe
Shop no longer operates as a startup in Shopify these days. It sounds like you might have more comp upside at the startup for more risk, but if your goal is to learn there’s almost no better place than shopify. If you’re good at your job there’s a lot Of Opportunity to move within Shopufy or try new things, default trust as well. Shop doesn’t pay too comp though, the opportunity for growth is deffo there
Wow thanks for this information. They wanna make me a mobile dev for the shop pay team. But I defs think I would rather do more full stack work because I’m still very early in my career so money isn’t my main priority right now. I wanna get as much hands on experience as I can. So I’m not sure if I agree with you in in terms of learning the most at shopify. I feel like I’ll Learn a lot more at the startup. Also how often are comp increases done ? Because I feel like $110k is very low and from what I see online it looks like it’d be very very hard to get a pay raise at shopify
Mobile development is with ReactNative, so your front-end experience is relevant.
Did you get L5 at Shopify? You should negotiate to get your base higher. And how did yelp get away with granting such a low TC? Their new grad offers were pretty decent a few years ago (140-160 TC)
Do not join Shopify - joined recently and am already leaving. Red flag company and very bearish on future prospects
Never account for the growth of the stock in your TC
Okay, even if the stock doesn’t grow my total comp is $142k at shopify
We're kinda going thru a recession to be honest, I think you will have a good average by joining now, a lot of shopifolk are down 50-70% on their stocks (so a TC drop of around 20%) heck I'm down like 20% There's probably more upside than downside, it's just risky to include the stock in your TC
