Facebook - Joining a team w/o diversity

I was looking at few possible teams to join at Facebook. One of the team aligns well with my interest. The problem i see is that everyone in the team including manager seems to be coming from same country (I am making guess based on the names). Lack of diversity seems bit concerning to me, would I be odd one out ? Do you have experience working in such team or heard from friend, hows it been ? #facebook

Time to learn Chinese Also consider plastic surgery

or Hindi

Depends on how you work in that non-diverse culture. I'm Indian and I know I can thrive in a majority chinese or majority white team but usually run into some issues on a majority Indian team. You'll only know that with more experience so I say try it out

I have worked in majority Indian team (I am from India), in comparison I enjoyed working more in diverse teams. Big red flag for this team is not even single person is from other background. Current dynamics might be making other people think the same as well.

Yeah diverse teams are always best. Stops people from bringing their personal culture into work. Im glad I narrowly dodged an all asain team and joined very diverse team at google (by luck) lol

Actually in this case I have a hunch it is a big orange white green flag.

Huge red flag. Nothing sucks more than feeling left out for simply not understanding mandarin or canto

Also if they need to cut anyone for the team, easy pickings...

What’s the proportion of Chinese or Indians in Facebook and google respectively? Any number?

70:30 —> Chinese:Indians

Apple vin406 May 29, 2020

It means there are twice more chinese than Indians in google. Wow

If they are open to having you on their team you shouldn’t be worried about it

Microsoft Msft-15 OP May 29, 2020

It kinda makes me think though, why did manager get it to this stage. I talked to couple of boot campers and they didn’t even look at the team for this reason.

Amazon heihe May 29, 2020

I believe the manager did not pick same country people on purpose. But sometimes it is easier to convince a person to join if you have same background. And it is safer for the manager because it is easier for manager to understand what the employee is thinking. I believe that’s all about it. It is not because the manager does not want to hire some other country people. The manager may also be stressful so he/she wants to hire someone soon and he/she can easily understand

it sucks even if they are super friendly the language barrier adds a lot of friction. you will get left out of many day to day conversations.
