Hi This is my day3 at FB and am confused regarding bootcamp. My bootcamp Mentor said I would need to choose a team and complete their tasks or something along those lines. ( I am having an extremely difficult time comprehending what mentor is saying because of a very thick accent and it feels bad to ask multiple Times) I am still going through the bootcamp basics but how do I choose a team eventually? Will my camp mentor assign me teams or is the onus on me to select a level 1/2/3 tasks from the list of tasks, complete them and reach out to the EM? My background is in Infra and I would like to choose a team based on infra, (is ads infra good?) could anyone please suggest a few good infra teams with good wlb (having some life changes and it matters a little) Thanks 200/15%/600 rsu/75 sign
The “boot camp” is a 6 week time period for you to learn about culture and find a team to work for. Your mentor is there to answer your questions, but depending on their experience they may not be helpful sometimes. If you are interested in infra, ask your mentor how to find infra teams that are hiring. Usually such teams have poc for bootcamp people, if not, message their manager and say you are interested in talking and who is the best contact. Usually you would talk to 2-3 teams, doing their bootcamp tasks to get a sense of their work and if you want to work with them. Also remember they may talk to different candidates too, so don’t just talk to one team, if they don’t pick you, you are stuck. If you really can’t find a team match in 6 weeks you can take a bit longer, but I heard you may get some pressure. Basic timeline is: Week 1: nothing Week 2-3: talk to as many teams as you want, do a few simple tasks Week 4: narrow down to 1-2 teams you want to work for, do more meetings and tasks and get more familiar with the teams Week 5: pretty much settling down which team you want, get a confirm from the team Week 6: graduate from bootcamp and join your new team
Thank you!! So I would first talk to a team and then do their bootcamp tasks? What level of tasks would I need to do?
Yoe and level ?
Which role? Sde?
Just wait you’ll have a hoard of managers wanting to talk to you i a couple of weeks. Just clarify with them if required. Be clear in jobs tool what you want or you’ll get too many teams
Day 3?? I am on my second week, and we didn't start looking for teams.
You’re still in bootcamp classes. Mentor will assign you tasks for now. in week 3 or 4 they’ll announce that team selection is open & mentor will not assign teams or tasks. It’ll be between you & the teams.
Yes, you can look around to find teams and areas that sound interesting. Reach out to the contact for the team to learn more,.get some tasks to see what the work is like, etc. Also, once you reach week 4 (right?), you'll be flooded by managers reaching out to you since there are far more openings than bootcampers and filling open headcount is one way managers are judged.
This is accurate. Stay on top of the onboarding tool and you'll be fine. Don't worry about team selection until week 3, then in week 4 you'll talk to managers, you'll have a meeting about what you need to do scheduled. Sorry about your mentor, but do at least a task a week and stay on top of the tool and you'll be good to go. A good mentor is helpful, but at worst if you're doing everything you need to they won't get in the way. You should get a peer group soon and you can ask them as well.
Thank you both! When you say do at least a task a week, do I first talk to a team and then pick a task or just randomly pick a task from the list of tasks (from teams I am interested in?) or will my mentor assign me a task?
