Question about women in their 30’s?
I've started interviewing with Facebook for a product design role. I would love some input from other designers at FB about work life balance, TC, general design culture, interviewing tips, and their take on being remote beyond Covid. Current TC is 101k plus 10% bonus potential which rarely happens. Anything I should be particularly mindful if we get to comp negotiations? Even being remote I would say I should ask for at least 180k plus hopefully signing bonus and RSUs. I have over 8 years experience in enterprise UX. 5 of those at Salesforce. #design #interviews
Work life balance is good, but it depends on your team. I would say most people are eager to work with design and very open to collaborating. TC will be dependent on level and location but definitely pretty high compared to other companies. You can apply to be remote but it just depends on your manager and whether they are okay with it. Interviews are pretty chill. Just practice app critique, whiteboard exercise, and a portfolio presentation covering at least 2 projects (make sure to include how you measured or would measure success)
Can you just say you live in Palo Alto but really live in Idaho? Or say you’re visiting family during Covid. And then if and when they ever go back to the office then you can relocate here? Take advantage of that higher TC? Lol asking for a friend
I mean you can I guess but I would think that’s some kind of tax fraud. I think the new lower compensation doesn’t start until 2021 so if you apply now for a job in mpk, I think u will get compensation package meant for MPK. Then you can ask for a relocation package for when the office does open up (which won’t be until September 2021 at the earliest) and u gotta work in the office.
Use levels.fyi for pretty accurate salaries. Fb has a strong design culture. You’ll be empowered to be a decision maker and a product leader
Oh yeah, forgot about levels.fyi. Good suggestion!
Happy to chat about design culture. Feel free to DM
I'll do that. Thanks. Also, in looking at levels I'm guessing I would be a 4 or 5? As already mentioned I'm senior now. Been that 3 years. So in my search I've been looking to move to lead or manager level.
Yea probs 4 or 5. I wouldn’t stress levels too much. At level 4, you’d still probably make WAY more than you do now
And basically when you’re a IC4, you’re supposed to do IC5 work if you wanna be promoted. And at IC5, you should be doing IC6. So coming in at ic5 can be intimidating
What are basic expectations of each? Is it things like: Being autonomous? Leading a team? Shipping things?
Yeah makes sense. That's a lot like how Salesforce was. And you're right, I would still make way more at ic4 than I do now.
Apparently I over prepared like hell for just an initial screening call with an internal enterprise design recruiter. I thought he was going to ask me more about my work and all but he mostly wanted to vet what experience I had in enterprise design. Oh well, it saves me some work down the road since I needed to create some fresh case studies and brush up my portfolio a bit.
That’ll come with ur portfolio reviews
Yeah he explained the process and that an email with materials was to follow.
DM me for questions, I just got a “hire ready” decision for IC4 at FB.
Did you end up taking the offer? If not, why?
Lol
Use levels for comp
So they finally got me scheduled for interviews next week. Any tips on the past work presentation and the app critique?
Salesforce offer you this low TC?
I'm based out of the indianapolis hub. So yeah 101 for senior is pretty good. Although should be higher now with 8 years experience. I would say for companies like Salesforce in the Indy area, of which there are only a few, I should be making more like 120. Low for the west coast but high for around here.
But now with Covid I'm hoping I can get in on some West coast comp now that so many places are being remote friendly. I know I probably won't get quite on par with those actually on the west coast but even something like 180 for my level is pretty low for somewhere like FB even if I'm remote.
