Facebook is always in the news lately for something bad. I know lots of amazing & kind people at FB who probably have nothing to do with the drama. Do employees ever feel the emotional/psychological toll of always being in the news? How do you cope? #tech #facebook #news
No reason to watch most news. Only a rage machine. Only news I need to watch is Channel 5 on YouTube.
- FB doesn’t care about their customers. - Bad ethics and attitude of top level management. - All they care about is minting money from people To your question, no people don’t care usually in lower end of the corporate chain as long as they get stuffed with 💰
Those who have any moral conscience would have left FB long ago
Other companies aren’t better
Iphones do not cause genocide in any countries
It's a beehive here & no one has time to think about news. in general regardless of company you learn to just focus on your career & personal life & your family.
You think that could be part of the problem too? And also define beehive in this context? Too busy?
Yes, busy with job duties.
It bothers me because I know the real story, I know what gets missed in the media. It bothers me I can’t share what I know. But sharing the real details may be worse, in my world (integrity) because it makes it even easier to abuse the system. I also can’t speak for other areas of the company (IG4k, Oculus) but in general 9/10 stories about content moderation and policies are so far off base.
This is par for the course for highly visible company, and FB employees have had time to grow a thick skin over the last few years. Sucks to be hated, but we're not Exon-Mobil or Big Tobacco or opioid pushers, and I think most people can live with themselves because they understand the details of what's being reported/sensationalized.
Not true. Social media can have worse effects than big tobacco
Net effect on a population scale? Tell me more....
The progress is usually like this 1) you read about the company's Evils when you're out 2) you come in and want to get outraged/fix things/just curious and actually internally look up and do research on what a "leak" is talking about 3) realize how misrepresented and sensational the news is 4) repeat a few times and the "leak induced news cycle" slowly stops bothering you
100%. Only a few things I disagree with, mainly the fact that we could double integrity budget next year and solve a large number of lingering problems. But there’s still more $$ on our integrity that arguably any other company
FB will never get credit. We need reverse accountability on the press.
Yeah won't deny it I feel great shame working here
How do you cope? Do you take any actions to improve the situation?
Nope it's hopeless. Aside from WhatsApp I'm just totally detached from the companies toxic products and have nothing to do with them as a user. Only bs excuse I sometimes tell myself is that it's a problem that's inherent within social media itself, if it weren't facebook it'd just be another platform. Like my mother-in-law is totally brainwashed from crazy conspiracies on Telegram groups. Bad actors will always try to abuse a platform People should just talk to their friends and family directly and privately like on IM and read proper newspapers
Plenty of really good people at all levels. Anecdotally no different from Google where I've worked for a few years. But there is some history of bad decisions that come back and bite from time to time. Also, most publicly traded companies have to keep growing, which makes some decisions really hard. At Google there was plenty of research on competitive behavior, ad sentiment etc. Most of those did not leak, you know? Neither did google shut those products down. If everyone in media hates you, they are bound to find dirt on you. Media houses are far from ethical. Their sales are going down, plus Facebook having bipartisan hatred bestowed upon it, is an easy target for twice the sale. Think about it. From inside, I just don't see systematic ill intent, and I have a lot of visibility from top to bottom. So no, I am not bothered because I know how and why things are playing out the way they are, and it will continue. And it won't stop. When I have evidence to the contrary I will quit.
media headlines are never positive about much of anything these days. Coupling this with shoddy tech journalism (journalists who have no stem background and poor professionalism), and this is what you get: https://twitter.com/joeosborne/status/1440456340673949700 Media literally cuts quotes off.
it is amusing that the media is casting stones Google didn’t shut those products down but I can’t imagine they’ve dinged people self-esteem as much as insta/Fb
