Interviewing for a systems EE role with both teams, Portal in the Bay Area and Oculus in Seattle. What’re the pros and cons of each team?
Do you know which building for oculus?
What type of questions they ask in these interviews for EE or firmware? As in topic
If it’s a telephone interview, basic from resume and then dwell in to basic EE fundamentals like how to make a battery charger circuit ? What is the role of capacitance in that circuit? Some fifo questions
Got it from EE perspective. For firmware in terms of video interview?
Portal hired an abysmal director that was fired from Lyft. You would end up working under him. Hard avoid.
Choose Oculus every time. Portal is a niche product which even if it does awesome (which it won't due to more macro problems at FB) is not going to move the needle much. Oculus OTOH is the king of the hill in VR and despite VR still being niche, it has way more mindshare. In terms of future prospects, coming from the Portal team gets you a meh job at Google/Amazon HW teams or at Samsung whereas coming from Oculus opens a lot more doors for you. Go with Oculus. In my case, I chose not to but that was simply becoz I had a better offer (both tc and scope of impact).
How is wlb in oculus Menlo Park?
Following same question for fb oculus redmond in hardware role
Oculus product is far more exciting if you ask me. A lot of people might not have even heard of the portal, let alone buying it, and honestly, I would choose an ipad over a portal anyday.
Portal is mini apple because it has most of the people from apple and I heard it carries apple culture (I don’t have experience with apple culture). But to me personally, Portal is more political and toxic in work culture. People are not straight forward and transparent. I moved from oculus to portal and regret my decision every day. I am stuck here. I would opt in Oculus any day when it is Oculus vs Portal. I will also choose AR and FRL research teams ahead of Portal if I have a chance to select my org or team.
portal EE team is focused mostly on jdm projects and learning opportunities could be limited
How is wlb in these teams ?
Don’t know much about oculus but for portal, lot of late evening calls with overseas team otherwise not too terribly bad
