Facebook IC5/IC6 offer

I got offer from Facebook (Oculus) for product design role based in Redmond. Currently working at Apple and have 8 years of work experience with PhD. I have been offered IC5 level, trying to negotiate to get IC6. Do I qualify for IC6? What to expect for compensation at IC5 and IC6? edit: My interview went really well and the manager really liked me. I feel he really wants me to join his team but i dont have any competing offers (didn’t really try). How much room for negotiation do i have? update: They offered me L6 with below package. HR mentioned they have room for negotiation and asked what i want. The initial offer does look low compared to what I have seen on levels.fyi but i do have less year of experience. I am going to give counter offer on Monday. Any suggestions on how much can I push? Base: $205k RSU: $400k 20% cash bonus + refresher equity no sign on bonus

Don’t have the details of offer yet. They asked me to provide my expected range which I declined to do. I am told they will get back to me after reviewing offer with compensation team.

Congrats on the offer. What kinds of questions were you asked?

Apple geek420 Sep 28, 2019

Mostly technical questions, looking for deep knowledge and expertise in the area and able to drive cross functional efforts. Also had 30 mins presentation to showcase the work I have been doing. Presentation is the key as that sets the tone for rest of the day.

Do you mind sharing your current TC? Mine is 180/25/30 base/bonus/rsu per year. PhD + 15 YOE. I’ve considered both Apple and FB Oculus. I want to know how underpaid I’m.

You should clear 200 base/20% bonus/80k stock at FB (non software) easily

Levels are fixed by your interview performance. Did you check with the recruiter before your interviewed?

Apple atlrunner OP Sep 27, 2019

I was told level will be decided based on my interview performance, same as what you said.

Facebook foggydesi Sep 27, 2019

You have the YOE, the degree and seems like your interview went really well .... Push for ic6 ...

What’s your level at Apple? Normally FB won’t up level you from my experience with Product Design roles. Either you have competing offers with higher levels at the likes of G, N, etc

Apple atlrunner OP Sep 27, 2019

I am IC4 at Apple. Based on my research it is equivalent to IC5 at Facebook

You cant really negotiate a level (and being leveled too high in fb is a really terrible experience). The expectations from different levels are dramatically different and if you were offered IC5 (which is a pretty senior level for a designer, good job!) It is because your interview performance made them confident you can meet that bar. You can try to negotiate better comp

Yea this. I would try to negotiate rsu’s as base has a band and bonus is fixed by level. Maybe a signing bonus tho these aren’t substantial for designers who are industry hires as far as I know. Being over leveled is gonna be a really rough experience and if you can beat expectations at the lower level you’ll do better than being slightly average at the higher one in my experience

Apple geek420 Sep 27, 2019

Thanks for feedback. I do realize expectations will be higher at L6 and there is a risk. However, they will not consider me for L6 if they believed I cannot deliver.

For PD in MPK my IC6 offer was 210k base / 20% bonus / 500k rsu - I think the range for ic5 might be like 160-180 base / 15% / maybe 350k rsu? I might be optimistic on the rsu part.

Apple geek420 Sep 27, 2019

Thanks for information. How many years of experience do you have?
