I'm a former UX Googler, who may want to rejoin Google or another FAANG company. Facebook has a few interested openings (including IG) but I've heard mixed reviews on WLB and culture. Anyone on here willing to give insight? Especially with how remote work is going as some of the roles have options for permanent remote. Currently, I'm a UX Lead, and would like a Senior Designer or Principle level. #uxdesign #design #productdesign #facebook #google
+1 heard some negative stuff from a friend but would like more perspectives
I'm sure it's like any company (even Google) where it depends on the Org and management, but it would be good to know if it's more of a company-wide culture issue.
I work at Instagram now as a product designer, WLB is very bad. Our last internal survey had work life balance rated as 8% favorable on my design team, which means only 8% of designers rated WLB favorably lol. I enjoy the design culture and the work but the fast pace of work on IG is not for everyone. I think FB is more chill.
Design culture at Facebook is better and less formal. We tend to work more I’d say, but that’s because things don’t move as slow. Google was a political shit show. Facebook has politics, but people are nicer and things happen out in the open for the most part.
That's encouraging to hear. I agree things moved at a snails pace at Google. I'm sure regardless of company politics are always a factor. If you have any insight on which teams are recommended (or not) at FB I'd love to know as I'm speaking to a recruiter soon.
Depends on the org/team. WLB comes and goes, but it came up in the last few design retros and continues to pop up as an issue they still have. HR and management will tell you to use PTO if you're feeling burned out, which is bullsh*t IMO. Having a good manager helps a lot, but it can be difficult since so many others have accrued PTO etc. Cultually - do you personally like FB/Insta/Oculus/WhatsApp? If not, it may be stressful. If so, all's well. The culture is like the Facebook app itself, which isn't meant for work, but more for socializing or connecting with others. P.S. I never worked at Google, so can't say how it compares.
What's the culture like? WLB?
