I have an onsite interview at Facebook in a couple of weeks. I have it going pretty well in my current team at Msft and I get about a 135k base at level 62 and am expecting to get to 63 by feb '17. Financially, how much can I expect FB to offer someone like me in Seattle. If it's not going to be atleast a 20% upside, I might as well avoid the interview for now.
You should talk about total packages. All the firms pay similar base salary
63 is usually e5 which pays 300-400k total
Base is somewhere around 175k
E5 would be tough to get at your level. Also 175 in Bay Area is more like $150k in Seattle.
Seattle and bay area pay is the same.
Yes I wanted to know total annual cash. I'm interviewing with Facebook Seattle.
Or should I hold out till the promo to 63 and then try?
Won't help. You're leveled based on your interview, not your current level. If you can't pass the interview at the level you want in order for you to take the offer, we are more likely to just not give you an offer. I've seen lots of bankers who are "Senior Vice Presidents" get leveled at e4 in interviews, so we just don't give them offers.
Interesting. I'd think it's pretty hard to level someone based on technical interview alone. Some people are just better at interviewing...
You will definitely get more than your current pay. But promotion in 6 months is unlikely at FB. You can try for a promo in a year or 1.5 years though. What should matter more is, are you going to have more fun here or are you enjoying your work there. Money isn't everything.
Here = Google/FB. I put them in the same bucket =)
I'm happy here, but I'm looking for a change of team soon anyway here, so I might as well look outside as well. I'm pretty sure ill have atleast as much fun at FB/Goog if I get in. I know the work culture is good. So the other variable is pay- hence my curiousity :)
If you are only focused on money FB may not be for you.
Comments like this are so stupid. No one "only" cares about money. Money is an important box that needs to be ticked off though. There's nothing wrong with wanting to maximize the value you get from your employer whether that's in learning or just compensation.
Yes the reason I was interested to know only the pay here is I already know the work culture at Facebook is great in general. And since recruiting for Facebook is not per team, there is no point enquiring about specific teams. May be I'll give my best shot and see what comes out.
As I mentioned, I'm not only focused on the money, but that's of course a factor if I'm considering a change.
I'm a developer...
