TL;DR My mom uploaded a video, the Facebook app re-uploaded it repeatedly. Now mom has a $400 cell bill. How can she get her money back? My mom's an old person, so I automatically thought the story she was telling me was going to belong on /r/oldpeoplefacebook but I actually think Facebook screwed up here. As the story goes, she had an "amazing" video of her friend playing guitar that she absolutely had to share. While she was at home, on wifi, she uploaded it. Something was wrong with the first upload so she tried again, also on wifi. My mom and dad hopped in the car and drove 8 hours to see my brother. While they were driving the video was uploaded something like 100 more times. They checked their bill and AT&T is charging them $400 for data usage. Facebook did send her alerts that she might have a virus, but I'm fairly sure the virus, in the case, was the Facebook iOS app. The mere fact AT&T charges her $20 per 500 MB is outrageous, but a contract is a contract. I think the Facebook app was attempting to recover from perceived errors, but it's causing my mom an unexpectedly high cell bill. Is there anyone at Facebook that can help?
My so connected her laptop to my mifi this weekend, piece of crap downloaded a Windows 10 update and ran me out of data. Luckily it's the end of the month.
My mom used to go over her data allotment on occasion with AT&T and they refunded the overage a few times. If she hasn't asked for a refund for data in the past they'll probably honor it.
Thanks, so much!
And while you're at it, get her in a family plan with unlimited data
Y r u paying for limited data?
why no unlimited? how can you enjoy the Internet's while on 101?
Att doesn't offer unlimited plans anymore. Does it?
Not that I have seen. Think only Sprint and T-Mobile do. Though I believe both are throttled... Not sure on that.
Facebook... Had sex with your mom?
Not funny. She's old
That's so lame Microsoft
I had a similar issue with google voice. Google voice had some issue which automatically let AT&T to make my international calls sometimes. This happens rarely and I never know when. I ended up with a huge phone bill and AT&T argued it was Google's fault. Finally after hours of talking to customer care I got it removed.
This is why I buy unlocked phones (more expensive at first) and take unlimited deals from H2O and others (much cheaper) and save in the long run a lot more
You should talk to att, not Facebook. Facebook app may have a bug. But they will not reimburse damage.
