Long time listener, first time caller … need advice from fellow Blinders! YOE: 15 Yrs, @Apple: 6 Yrs Apple: M1, TC ~$410K, Base: $198K, Unvested RSUs: ~$610K - Commute: 1 hr (post COVID) Overall I enjoy working at Apple, partly since I am comfortable with my work, have a good network/team, decent manager and love Apple products. Long term, I feel Apple is a stable company, hence less stuff to worry about (stock is on fire lately). Unfortunately, I feel it’s tough to get a M2 in my org. given the current circumstance. Also, I frequently propose great ideas, efficiently run my team (which is rare at Apple) and my team members really enjoy working under my leadership but somehow I feel my manager is not someone who thinks much about career progression. WLB is reasonable if you manage your time wisely. Facebook offer on the other end feels financially lucrative and M1 at FB is definitely a promo compared to current title. The concern is, I am not too excited about the new team (also FB products in general - specially Oculus). New manager seems decent but there are quite a few unknowns. Part of me wants to stay at Apple but the TC delta is simply too wide to ignore. Do you folks think it’s worth talking to my manager at Apple? Does Apple typically matches other offers / promotes? Any other suggestions? Any advice about FB? #apple #facebook #software #offer
Why not move within Apple where there is opportunity to grow. Yes, that TC is great indeed
Apple doesn’t encourage internal mobility
If it's SWE, then stay at Apple for stock growth and WLB, Facebook WLB is terrible compared to Apple SWE. Also, is your TC at Apple after the stock appreciation? If you're at Apple for 5 years, why your TC is so low?
Yes after appreciation, I feel my TC is on the lower side.
yea, no reason to stay behind after cliff. give fb a shot and go back if you don't like it. lots of applers come and stay due to open culture (more so than the other way around). Apple is known more for HW than SW, not a great place for SWE comparatively speaking.
How many years as manager? You will probably start at 0th step towards m2 with no relationships in new environment Just wait for right moment here at Apple Stock will increase at great pace
M1 at Fb is M2 at Apple. M1 compares to their E6, not E5 or IC 4. So they will already be ahead
Dude I’m on the same boat. M1 and my base and rsu is lower than yours.
Did you talk to your manager yet?
I’m planning on leaving. The comp difference nowadays is very high and I feel like I need a new environment
I’m looking outside the company to bring up my tc. I don’t feel motivated to lead my team with a ict 3 like salary
Unlikely that Apple will match based on personal experience. I am ICT and my comp is higher with stock appreciation. Joining FB in Oct with a lesser offer than yours simply because it has been too long here(5+ years for me too). Will see how FB goes, otherwise boomerang.
Did your team tried to retain you? Even if they didn’t match the exact numbers. What was the conversation like?
Yes, they tried hard(my perception) but FB offers are hard to beat with retention offers. You may get M2 though but even then comp might be lower than FB. I’ve read so many comments about FB being hard for M1/E6 etc. and I caved in but I think a high performing ICT4/ICT5 should be able to adapt to it. My WLB at Apple was pretty screwed so FB might actually be easier or same.
I think FB M1 is equal to Apple’s M2. I am M1 at Apple, so not exactly down level here.
I think you are closer to M2 promo at Apple. Have an honest conversation with your manager before making a decision
Dont take me for my words bcos i work at apple as well, but for an extra 100k a year, you will be loosing your WLB and there are many unknowns. Better to stay at Apple and strive for an M2.
Thanks! Hence I am having this thread. Actually TC delta is close to $200K which is not as easy to overlook
You are correct! But if you have been in apple For long, the appreciation in stock price will make up for that difference. My colleague is now wanting to join Apple back after working in FB for 6 months. He has lost is WLB, constant fear of PIP made him have sleepless nights. Offcourse it depends on the team, but something to think about

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
That TC jump is hard to ignore. Take the risk and checkout FB. It’s been 6 years at Apple anyway.
