Facebook vs Box offers. Help evaluate please!
They are both for SWE in the Bay area. I have 8 yrs exp with a Master's. Of course FB has better brand name on resume and I'd prefer FB but does it make sense to take less comp for FB? E4 seems like a step back for my career too. I really like Box too. People at the interview were smart and there was ex Facebooker. Which offer should I accept?
Ask them to match on equity and keep same base?
Idk if $100k sign on is possible yet. Even that it'll be $250k vs $300k
You won't get 100k at e4. What you have seen are return intern sign on at e4. Expect 50k if you have a competing offer. Sorry
I would go with a box offer. There is no reason for you to be downleveled.
Thanks. I actually set my goal to get into FB but I'm leaning toward Box at this point too. How long would it take to get from E4 to E5? Is it true if you don't get to E5 after 2,3 years then you are fired?
yes it's true, the cap to E5 is 3 years. But I would take the box offer, the path to get promoted is a huge pain.
Brandnames are meaningless. Changing CSS colors is not the same as architecting complex system. Which job is more interesting? Do a good job and pay will follow

Spacex and tesla have even more interesting challenges imho. I'm all about startups though, if you must work for a big company might as well tier 1 or go home.
Are these the only two places you tried presumably due to peninsula location reasons? That base gap of $50K is quite substantial and unless you switch companies, it can take many years to go from 150->200K base at the same company. The storage space is going to be just another commodity service (hard business) and not one with huge future upside, so, carefully hedge bets. If someone is willing to pay you $200K base, you can and maybe should have more options to choose from. Just my two cents.
I have other offers too but these 2 are my top choices. Uber offer has lower base than Box and mostly paper money. Other offers works are not very interesting.
That's the only concern I have about Box. It's in a very competitive market.

Don't for get that the stock refreshers at Facebook will make up for much of that gap
Box has refresher too. Do you know the refresher amount for E4?
Also happy to talk about Box. That offer is the top of the senior band w.r.t. base. We have great refreshers for good performance as well.
I'm out of pm. Do you think i still have room for RSU and sign on bonus? How's the refresher grant at Box? The recruiter told me there is no % bonus at Box but there is a certain bonus amount per level. It's not very clear. Could you explain the bonus at Box?
Don't think you're gonna get a better offer for senior. No bonuses afaik but I've received significant performance/retention bumps to both salary and stock outside of the usual yearly market adjustments.
Consider value of equity, the two are very different.
FB has a bonus target. It's at least 10% of your base for a meets all rating. Just keep this in mind. Does Box pay bonuses?
No bonus at Box but even after 10% bonus still ~$50k diff.
did you go back to FB and ask if they will match?
The recruiter said that won't be able to match that box offer at E4. He says that's an E6 base.
I may have an option to do a second system design to adjust to E5 but I may not have enough time because of offers deadlines.
