Facebook vs Dropbox

Currently working at Amazon as SDE2 in Seattle with 6 yoe (2 in Amazon), tc is 200k, feeling underpaid. Got couple offers recently, only considering fb and dbx. Need some advices from you guys.

Fb: e4, base 165k, rsu 280k, signon 100k, location mpk
Dbx: ic2, base 170k, rsu 260k, signon 40k, location SF

Considering col and tax, the packages are pretty same with current, but wondering what do you guys think?

  • The dollar figure amounts are good, but seems like they’re down leveling you. Would have thought 6 years experience would be an E5 at FB.

Don't have hard numbers yet; working with the recruiter to put together a case before going to the comp committee. I have a competing offer from Snap and my Amazon TC is around ~240 right now (TT + stock appreciation) so I'm pushing for whatever the absolute max is (I've seen 160/300/100 around here but that may be a bit dated).

Also going on-site for Dropbox soon (which I'm kinda interested in), so this thread definitely caught my attention.

  • I have half your experience, don’t live in a competitive market (not Bay Area, or Seattle, or Austin) and make more.

My advice? Fucking negotiate. Ask for more when interviewing. Tell them you want 300k up front. Before they extend an offer. Maybe you’ll land around 280k. But if they come at say 250, you can say “listen my expectation was 300, this is too low”. Not exactly in those words, but more elegantly.

Idk if thats good advice. The early expectation may disqualify him early. It’s way better to negotiate after you’ve crushed the interview. Has that worked for you?

    • To be fair I set my expectations after one really good onsite and they invited me back to get to know the team better (at my request). Then I took the job. But at that point I knew they wanted me.

Thanks, I’m trying to negotiate, but looks like the recruiter not willing to do so

Fwiw, internal transfer bw locations is straightforward - you might be able to move back after about a year. Doesn't make sense the recruiter is stonewalling this request frankly. Costs the company so much to pay for relocation..

For FB, your base is above average for E4, and your stock grant is average or maybe a little low. I’d get competing offers and try to increase the stock grant if you can. Also try to see if you can work in Seattle.

Dropbox is in the middle of red ocean. FB has a ton of problems but they dominate the market. See their recent earnings.
