Facebook/Snap/Google offers (Seattle)

Currently trying to decide between a few offers, all in Seattle. 3.5 yoe. Leaving Microsoft partially because I'm tired of the top-down culture and lack of direction of my product, partially because of upcoming stock cliff. Facebook: 160k base 50k signing 260k stock pros: culture seems really collaborative and independent, good balance in company size, opportunity to meet teams during bootcamp before joining cons: wlb bad in certain teams, very fast engineering process can lead to stress, not in love with the company as a whole in terms of ethics Snap: 160k base 500k stock pros: $$$, smaller company size allows for more impact, i'd be working on infra but on some pretty core scenarios cons: not 100% sold on the team, have heard bad things about the culture in terms of secrecy between teams and bad/rushed engineering practices, less opportunities for switching between teams, riskier product Google: Currently at team matching so no numbers yet. met some teams but not 100% excited about any of them. meeting a few more this week pros: great engineering system, collaborative culture, i love google products cons: comp still pending, none of teams jibed with me, culture seems to have become less "googly" over time Looking to hear from people who work in these offices--if you have any insights that I'm not thinking about or if I'm wrong about any company please let me know. Just trying to gather as much data as possible to make the best decision possible :) #snap #snapchat #facebook #google #seattle #offer

I'd take FB or Google. Even though snap stock is 500K, it's not stable and will probably be worthless in a few years compared to FB or Google.

Snap grants do vest monthly though, plus good refreshers. You don't have to commit to staying there forever.

Google oczg85 Apr 6, 2020

At google expect 1yr ramp up time. If u join now, next refresher is only at end of 2021.

Microsoft toDa11 OP Apr 6, 2020

Damn, that's a pretty long time. That's good to know, thank you.

Can you shed some light on some of the things that make ramp up so long? Is it the difficulty of tooling/way of working at google?

Amazon quantish Apr 6, 2020

Looks like standard Snap L3 offer, could get a sign-on bonus too esp with your competing offers. FB L4 offer looks a little low on RSU. Try to bump to at least $300k and I think $400k is max for level (for what I've seen recently).

Microsoft toDa11 OP Apr 6, 2020

Thanks for the tip. I'm circling back with Snap, hoping I can get that bonus and maybe circle back with FB in response.

Microsoft toDa11 OP Apr 6, 2020

@tactical12 I'm not sure what pre-allocated means--do you mean I've been pre-matched to a team? If so I haven't and would be going through bootcamp. At Snap I'd be in the Data Infrastructure org.

Google Eva00 Apr 7, 2020

I'd take FB at this moment, or this year.

Facebook copol Apr 7, 2020

I would go to Snap for 1 year and see how it works, both FB and G keep your offer open and valid for one year.

Microsoft toDa11 OP Apr 7, 2020

That's a really good point. My Snap recruiter told me the same thing. I'm confirming with Google and FB. Google has previously told me that if I said no right now they might not be able to give me the same offer since I won't have as many competing offers. But I guess I could just interview at a few more places for more leverage...

Microsoft toDa11 OP Apr 8, 2020

Future readers, I confirmed with my recruiters and this is *sort of* true according to them. Basically, your feedback doesn't expire for a year. They can't guarantee you'd get another offer because they can't predict future headcount. Currently I can't imagine either company would stop hiring given the new demand for many of their services due to COVID-19. Both companies may require an extra interview or two depending on how you did last time, and at Google you may not get the same team if that team no longer has headcount, meaning you'd go through team matching again. Also, as mentioned in the above comment, offer numbers may not be the same as they're built from competing offers.

Google Sr. Deuss Apr 7, 2020

In a similar boat, my choices are FB, Snap and Amazon.

Microsoft toDa11 OP Apr 8, 2020

Good luck! How are you feeling so far? And why are you leaving Google?

Google Sr. Deuss Apr 9, 2020

I was in MSFT for almost 10 years and was screwed up in all regards. Entered Google 4 years ago without much knowledge about the outside world, learned a lot about the industry, the product, what a healthy environment looks like and how to function in it, gained respect and confidence, and sadly realized I am still underpaid although TC is much higher than MSFT (I was L65 with 220k TC, now TL for 10 eng, 440k TC this year before the cliff/ will drop to 310k after). Time to step up and capitalize.

Google Workd@Snap Apr 10, 2020

As someone that has personally worked at all three companies, DO NOT WORK AT SNAPCHAT EVER EVER EVER If you don't believe me, DM me your LinkedIn, I will add you and reveal my identity. FB, Snap and G are all on my profile. Snapchat is trash.

Microsoft toDa11 OP Apr 10, 2020

I don't not believe you, but what's trash about it?

Google Workd@Snap Apr 10, 2020

https://medium.com/@marko_tupper/my-time-at-snap-83134da32e01 I'm not the author of this, but absolutely none of it surprises me. My experience was not quite this bad, but I can at least confirm many of the things in it (such as the beds being placed in random meeting rooms to make it seem like someone lived there). My offer stands, if you decide you're interested.

Amazon songdabao Apr 17, 2020

I am in exact same boat, wonder what op decides eventually?
