Hello Blinders, I recently failed Amazon and eBay on-sites for QA/SDET roles. I think did pretty well in my interviews. I cleared the BR in Amazon but the HM thought I was weak in manual testing and the recruiter suggested me to apply for SDET roles in the future. For eBay the team found another experienced candidate and they thought he will be a better fit. That's the only feedback I got. I was really counting on those as they were the only interviews I had and got them through referrals. The response rate for online applications has been super low or almost non existent. I recently graduated from grad school and do have 2+ years of experience under my belt but these have been really trying times. I really don't have much money left in bank, and I am demotivated to back to job boards and apply again. Plus, those were some of the best QA/SDET roles available in the NY area(looking everywhere but NY was the priority)and I am disappointed I missed out. How did you guys get yourself out of a similar situation and establish a good career? I would deeply appreciate any insights. It would be really awesome if anyone is up for a quick chat. I would love to talk! Thank you :) #interviews
Dont loose hope.. weak in manual testing ? I dont quite get how this feedback makes sense .. Since you are just 2 years into your career.. dont have location constraints and be willing to move out of NY. Another advice.. are you a Computer science major ? If yes.. look for Dev roles instead of QA..
That role involved manual testing and they wanted the candidate to have that. Not a big fan personally but was puzzled myself. I have been looking outside of NY as well, just that NY would have been icing on the cake. I have been looking at dev roles, but I have worked at 3 different orgs and have good experience with Automation tools. Getting calls for QA roles has been a lot easier than dev, especially since Covid
Btw does eBay allow you to apply to other teams right away after an On-site? Any idea if there is a cool off period or something?
You did not fail. You were rejected by 2 companies. Keep working 👍
On it! Thanks dude :)
Same boat five months ago and same boat now with one more failed onsite. You only failed if you stopped trying. Get back out there with even more fire. You can do this! I’m forcing myself to not fall back into the depression loop because it didn’t get me anywhere. Thinking of rejection as a stepping stone to something even better! You’ll get there one day and tell people success stories of how you had it so difficult and you finally made it because you never gave up. I have one more try this Friday and if that goes kaput I’ll take a month break before trying again because I’m out of companies and chances. Once you apply through the job board, reach out to recruiters too! Give them a pitch to make them interested to give you a chance! Good luck OP!
OP I assure you thousands of other blind users have been where you are. Yes you may have missed out on one opportunity but you risk losing out on more if you let yourself believe you are a failure. That’s a self fulfilling prophecy. Take a break. Regroup and analyze your failures. Prepare again for two months diligently and start networking in parallel on Blind/LinkedIn or your friends. Start giving practice interviews regularly and get that fear out of your system. Get back to it. You got this!
Thank you brother 🙏. That's reassuring
