Feeling really down… I have worked years in analytics and use SQL everyday. I just did a phone screen with SQL question, it felt hard when I did it but my nerves got the better of me and I wasn’t able to do it (I was on the right track). I thought about the question after the interview and realized it wasn’t that hard. Similar to the many practice questions that I did online I feel so embarrassed right now Edit: Wow, I didn't really expect my post to get this many replies. It still stings but everybody's words of encouragement are helping me cope with this little by little. Some of you asked for the question - I didn't save it but my solution (if I were to do it over again) involves window and CTE functions. I wasn't able to reply back to everybody but I have read every message, so thank you.
It's okay, there's something better in store for you. Keep pushing your limits.
You only fail if you stop trying. Until then it is just getting more experience and practice
Thanks everyone. I am in Canada and I really want to leave this country and this might’ve been one chance to do so
Which company was this?
It's never the only chance
What was the question?
This 👆
I didn't save it but it involved Window and CTE functions
It happens unfortunately.
What do you do at BMO? What company did you interview with? Also, practice some LC/HackerRank SQL questions.
Hackerrank is good! But I find the wording of some of the questions so so confusing. Are questions during the interview similar to that?
I have tried hackerrank too and the language is confusing. That's the trick you need to prep on these platforms to clear interview. Not much to do with your real life sql expertise
Don’t let that defeat you. Too many SQL jobs out here for this one to take your joy.
It happens to even the most experienced. Sometimes you just blank. All you can do is keep practicing, but even then, you will never always 100% ace every SQL interview. Even people who practice everyday still mess up; it is unfortunately the definition of being human. Give yourself grace and do more interviews to maximize your chances of success.
I just feel so bummed out because the answer came to me right answer the interview ended. The best I could do near the end was tell the interviewer how I would reapproach the problem if I were to do it over again
I think this happens to everyone though. I know what you’re going through and I’m sorry. 😞 do NOT beat yourself up though. These are special kinds of questions that only have their place in interviews. Even if you use sql every day for your job, the format is completely different from an interview.
It's okay...happens to all of us
It’s ok op. Hope this will help you in preparing better for next interviews.
