And now most slow followers who are spinning up SRE orgs will again slow follow this by 2030
I know this is dumb but what’s the next evolution step for SREs? I thought with my operations experience I’ll soon target SRE roles but if it’s a dying role then I need to replan.
@pipin what's operations experience?
LinkedIn just did it too so I guess it's a trend.
It’s over
No fucking way 😰
Lol . No ways. We rely a lot on our SREs. Especially in GCP
Now a days a SWE role does everything. We get paid a lot…yes… but people don’t know how much stuff we do here.
Definitely don't feel paid enough to do all the roles greedy corps want to throw at me, specializations exist for a reason
On call for a week 5-7 times a year too?
Cake
SREs and SWEs have very different skill sets. We did this here and a lot of people left because they don’t like to suck at their jobs.
When did the switch happen, when I was there SREs we’re just called SWEs?
They don't have different skill sets, they have different responsibilities. SREs are supposed to be as good as any other SWE in terms of coding ability, but they focus on infrastructure, automation and reliability rather than creating user facing features. FWIW I've never been a SRE, but worked closely with them in infra projects and interviewed lots of SRE candidates
It won't happen
