Fake it til you make it… I did and I feel like I’m gonna fail any second. I some how have a senior level role for DS but I don’t know what’s going on half the time. I have moderate levels in coding and understanding system design and scripting but not enough to actually be a high level worker.. I don’t know how I passed the technical interviews and the only reason I even got an interview was because I was socialized with a Senior Manager and he was like come interview for my team and I’ll refer you. It’s like they took his word and hired me when I’m reality I’m one of those shitty workers that’s gonna hold team back because I have no idea what’s going on. Half my week is filled with meetings so I’m getting by but things are starting to get assigned to me and it feels like every step I’m asking for help or frantically googling simple shit I should already know. Everyone in my team has years of experience and a masters or phd.. I have a bachelors from a no name school. I’m trying my best reading every documentation I can but I have this gut feeling they can already tell I don’t know anything or wondering how I got here.. Idk I feel like I have no where to vent this so here I am TLDR: idk how I got hired and I wanna cry TC: 150k #tech
Just do your best and live your lie, fake it till you make it. You'll make it
sound like half the people I ever worked with
Lol
Results for job roles of "Associate Software Engineer" are starter positions with expectations that you need growth and to make mistakes. That's me. I'll take the lower salary for 1 - 1.5 years of experience. SPT > ASWE Results for job roles of "Software Engineer" have a substantial amount of expectations, experience, and the requirements which are immediate. That's not me. Good Luck to OP.
Calm down. Do one thing at a time. Maybe put in some extra hours. Make sure you get in some exercise- it will help with the stress. You can figure this out. They know who/what they hired. They’re not going to expect you to be at PhD + years of tenure, anytime soon. Stop comparing and figure out where/how you fit in.
How do you like Flexport btw
who/what LOL
Breathe. You’re going to be okay. There’s not one single person on Blind who hasn’t faked it. At least once. Keep googling. You’re there for a reason. And as someone who hires people frequently in these roles, I hire personality and grit over knowledge sometimes. You can be the smartest person in a room and have zero people skills. Lean into what you’re great at, even if they are soft skills. But keep learning and educating yourself in the background. Find a mentor online. Pay a coach. Do whatever needs to be done to help you reduce your anxiety. But you got this. Don’t give it up.
Great advice. Are you currently hiring?
Yes!
Take a deep breath and realize there is a finite amount of knowledge necessary to be competent at your current job. Each day, little by little, you are progressing towards that competency. This state of “idk what’s going on” will pass.
Keep “faking it”. Like the TED talk said, “fake it until you become it” Keep making strides forward. Baby steps beats standing still Don’t give up on yourself. Leave it to the employer to decide if you aren’t suitable for the role. In the meantime, keep at it and take it one step at a time
I think we all secretly feel this way at least some of the time, if not often. Take it a day at time and focus on trying to learn a little more and be little better each day. That's all many of us do anyway! You'll make it!! Or at least you'll have tried. There's plenty in higher positions who have no clue what they're doing and don't even realize it
I’m guessing they’re giving you some ramp up time. Spend some extra hours after work each day or weekend catching up your knowledge for a couple months
I’m rooting for ya dude. I hope you make it. Try your hardest. Hopefully you’ll become a master at what you do, even if you don’t know much right now. Keeps us posted if you can
You passed your technical interview. Give yourself some more credit
