City driving and parking convenience (driving to work, malls, restaurants etc.). Safety and security of bike ownership. To avoid traffic at peak hours, if that's even possible. Especially around SFO, SJC, Sunnyvale and areas nearby. #bikes #bayarea #residence #office #commute #safetyculture #motorcycle
Convenient: Yes Safe: No
I once had a guy walk up to me in a parking lot telling me how cool my e-bike was. Then he mentioned how he can’t ride one anymore, as he showed me his amputated right foot, due to a car crushing his leg in a motorcycle accident. Since then I haven’t ridden my bike much. So yes it’s convenient and fun, but you’re one accident away from losing a limb or death.
Not at all
You know what organ transplant doctors call Motorcycles? Donorcycles. But in terms of the Bay Area in general. Generally safe in terms of avoiding injuries compared to other areas of the country, but expect to get your bicycle stolen if it's not locked up in your house. Also, wildly different areas mean different things. San Jose has tons of bike lanes, but the peninsula and SF (essentially older areas), are lacking.
I think the Bay Area is a wonderful place to ride a motorcycle. I take mine all over the place.
Safe and motorbikes don’t mix
I drive a motorcycle in the bay area exclusively in off peak hours. This one time I was waiting at a red signal in heavy traffic when the driver in the car next to me rolled down his window and said I was the only sensible motorcyclist on the road for not lane splitting and driving around like a maniac in heavy traffic. Plenty of other motorcyclists passed me during that commute by lane splitting. I keep to the side roads and my suburbs as much as I can. Since the birth of my first kid, I stopped driving on freeways. There's way too many distracted drivers. In fact, I'm surprised there's not more severe car accidents given how distracted people are. People blame God for tragedies while taking their own safety when hurtling down the freeway with a couple of hundred distracted drivers for granted.
Only in Marin, Sonoma, and Napa counties.
