I've been at Amazon for 1.2 years. I used to be very excited but now it's just work work work, alarms go off, COEs raise, manager gets annoyed, etc. I no longer find fulfilment in life besides working everyday from 10a-11p. People in my team post CRs at 2am and next day manager praises the "efficiency". I took one week off to do nothing. It helped a little until this month. I took some filler interviews and realized I sound completely depressed during behavioral rounds. Im never like this Im a us citizen, have enough $ to last rest of 2020. I have no debts besides monthly rent... Bla bla bla. My only concern is, will I be able to find employment once i have a 6 months gap? How did you deal with your last burn out? #engineering #software #swe EDIT: omg this post blew up. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one out here feeling like this. thank you all who has provided helpful comments or reached out with warm messages! I will try to find something (either internally or externally) before I drop the HR email, but I'll post an update when I have one. I appreciate y'all!
I feel you man, I worked at Amazon for about two years. it is not fun.
Lol I lasted a year but I’m older and realized money ain’t worth that
How many hours you used to work per week?
You should start interviewing. I will atleast secure one job before quitting and let the new company know you will join 6 months later.
Will a company go for that?
YES! Big companies like FB and Google do that. Also, even if you refuse and mail them back within an year they most likely take you back as you cleared the bar.
Resign and take couple of months of break. I would have recommended travel if not for these times. Read books, spend time with your loved ones. It doesn’t matter in the long run. So many people wish they were in a place where they could take a breather. You can. Prioritize mental health over any goddam thing.
That’s what I did - resigned and am now taking a break. Employers (especially tech) will understand why you left as Amazon burnout culture is well known across the board. Don’t sweat it and start again in 2021 as you can afford to do so financially. The mental strain is not worth it and your new employer will not thank you if you walk in with the lingering remnants of a burnout. You want to give them and you your best efforts (which you won’t get by staying at Amazon) Good luck.
Why don't you just do the minimal and stay at your job and interview with other companies? Don't worry about your teammates raising CRs at 2am. Worst case would be you might get a pip. If you are mentally prepared for that then you should be fine. You can quit your job too. With the covid situation just be prepared to stay unemployed for longer time.
This is what I don't understand. Why do people like OP not know how to set basic boundaries with work?
It's like an American saying why the hungry kid in Kinshasha not just farming to get rid of hunger... Dude/Madam, OP works at Amazon.
Transfer to a team in HR and then rest and vest
Wtf does that mean? Do you think HR is a pleasure cruise or something?
That's mean!!!! HR does amazing jobs and they have their own pressure. Don't judge without knowing it is always better.
I have interview with AWS. Should I back out?
Run fast and far away
I flunked an on-site a month ago and am treating it as a blessing in disguise
It might be a good time to take a long break. You can use covid 19 as excuse. I.e, your family member got ill and you had to take care of them full time, etc
Health first always. You need a break. You are a citizen and in tech, so finding jobs shouldn’t be a challenge for you.
A 6 month gap is nothing if you use it well
