Hey Blind, I received an offer from Fidelity for Durham, NC location for Principal Software Engineer today: Base - 155k Bonus - 25% Private Shares - 9k It looks low, even with the current market situation. But I really like the tech stack and the product I will work on if I accept it. Does it make sense to sacrifice TC for a long-term career progression? Current TC: severance package #engineering #offer #fidelityinvestments
It looks low? Do people not realize shit companies have been paying low even before covid? This offer is aligned with past years.
How shitty is Fidelity? They don’t lay off workers, I would give them a credit for that.
Sure, but thats what seniors were getting precovid
I make more at NetApp. Less than 6 YOE
(Same location)
How much netapp pays for your experience in NC?
With the money and interest you have in life, do you want the extra $20k in your bank to save up for something or do you want to work on the tech stack you like?
It doesn’t have to be either or. I want to work on an interesting product and not to worry about rising CoL at the same time.
you have your answer
what’s your YOE ?

Take the job, double dip with severance. Look for a better paying job while collecting 2 paychecks.
OP don’t listen to some of the people on here. Being a principal engineer at Fidelity should look pretty good on your resume, it’s not a ‘shitty’ company by any means. On top of that, if you really like the tech stack/product, it sounds like you’d be working on something pretty high profile like Fidelity’s core stock/portfolio tracker or the robo advisor. I’m pretty sure you’d learn a lot too. You should be after long term growth anyway, not gambling with short term TC chasing like me or possibly that Snap guy up top. Guess who comes out on top in the end anyway? All this being said, you should still negotiate further if you can. Just get the recruiter on a call and ask for more. Overall the TC’s not bad at all for the Research Triangle area though.
Appreciate your advice.
What a terrible advice. Principal engineer at fidelity is interviewed as a mid level at faang
I’m jealous of the base at that level. I’m a level above with 140k base. I moved from software engineer to squad lead tho
How do you move from software engineer to squad lead ?
Well first I told my chapter lead and squad lead that that’s what I wanted to do (2 years ago). They saw potential and mentored me and then another VP I used to work with referred me to a job
Fidelitys pay is a bit lower because of the 10% profit share and 7% 401k match. The work/life balance is usually pretty damn solid though. Growth & promotions can be a bit hard to come by, but lateral movement is pretty doable after about 2 years in a role. Also it’s pretty rare to actually hit the high end of the bonus payout. If the range is 20-25%, you can probably expect to realistically get 22-23% of that
Did you join finally?
I decided to go with another company which offered higher base salary (180).
