Field Engineer @ GE struggling to switch

I graduated undergrad a year ago with a dream to go into management consulting. But unfortunately, I attended a non-target school and had a decent GPA. I got a job at GE and been trying to switch for 8 months. Why? My role was supposed to be a development program, where I would have all the training I need to succeed. The company said I would go to France for training but no training has ever happened. I don’t think GE is the right company for me. I really want to get into a more business role at a company with a supportive culture. Ideally any sort of consulting that includes travel. My resume looks good, any tips on how i can finally get a job that makes me happy? anyone else feeling stuck in their first job?

Have you applied for CAS within GE? That sounds like much closer to your career alignment goals. Are you on an existing leadership program?

I really want too but I still need to wait another year before I fit the two year requirement :( Not a corporate leadership program but the role was called graduate field service engineer then they immediately changed it to field service engineer

Therein lies a lot of your problem; any role GE advertises as “Graduate” which isn’t within a leadership program track is essentially their way of filling a role with cheaper resources. More experienced folks won’t apply to graduate listed roles, then when you join you’re folded into the standard bands and categories but with a lower comp. It’s rough. Best recommendation is to apply to your traditional consulting firms and to also find and reach out to the most relevant CAS executive audit manager, they can pull strings on occasions to get folks a pilot despite the requirements. Certainly can’t hurt.

What's GE TC?

GE MBAhopeful OP Aug 16, 2019

I honestly never heard TC before! Sorry I’m not much help.

There are a few folks at Bain who made the switch to Bain from GE's internal consulting arm. I would suggest doing work within the company that might be more similar to consulting.

Awesome! Thank you! Would being an associate consultant for GE Healthcare be useful as I pursue a career at a consulting firm?

I would imagine! No guarantees. The most important thing would be to be a rockstar at GE.
