This article did a good job explain the difference in compensation for entry level SWE roles at finance firms vs tech firms. If you work at the companies mentioned do you think the numbers are accurate? If you looked into both a tech role in finance and a tech role in FAANG would like to know how you made your final decision. https://insights.dice.com/2019/12/17/software-engineer-analyst-pay-jpmorgan-finance/
Banks pay less yes, but at c1 the wlb is pretty good. Since c1 wants to brand itself as a “tech company”, software engineers are actually treated pretty well. Work is boring though and not much room for innovation since there’s so much regulation and compliance stuff around banks
I heard the comp at C1 can be okay, I know someone who was at 250 with 4 YoE which is better than what GS can pay...
Christ I’m underpaid then. I’m at $115 TC, 4 YOE
Short and sweet: completely accurate
Very accurate. But this article hasn’t include hedge funds
My WL balance is amazing, I work maybe 15 hours a week and it's all WFH with a TC over 200k. That being said I plan on leetcoding hard and interviewing at all the major tech firms in NYC. Trying to shoot for 50-100% more comp.
How are you pulling 200k out with 15h in
I lucked out on my negotiation and my team
Accurate but the bonus for JPMC isn’t always that high. Especially as an analyst who isn’t in NYC. I took it because I unfortunately decided to apply there only and not look anywhere else when I got the offer out of college. Been almost 5 years and ready to get out now. Also, JPMC culture sucks from a tech perspective. All smoke in mirrors.
I know a guy who has been working for JPMC for 8 years and he is still an associate. Unfortunately he is too much of a coward to interview elsewhere and doesnt want to leave his "friends". What a waste of potential.
Yeah screw that. I started studying and gearing up a few months ago. I have interviews with Google and Amazon next month. The management there is atrocious. They will never do the right thing and it’s always about advancing their own careers. Sad. None of those people are their friends lol
Salary is only decent at vp or higher level at banks ie senior equivalent and only in certain group like trading
Yep.
I checked levels.fyi. Seems for example Two Sigma doesn't out-pay FAANG. Is it accurate for non-tech companies though? Any ideas?
Looks right to me although at least for Capital One more people live in DC which is way cheaper than SF or NY
What are you looking for? Maybe GS is not where you'll get paid the fattest checks, but if you stay within finance (e.g. hedge funds) you'll probably get paid more than any other Finance or Tech company
While this is true it sure as shit isn't true at Goldman. I imagine if I were to switch to a hedge fund or even a tech company I'd be making more than my peers with 3 yoe over me
