I have 12 yoe ... 5 in investment banking (quant trading), and 7 corporate finance (basically Amazon). Am I too old if I wanted to switch to data science? If not too old, can I get some tips on how to switch? I know the basics of Python and SQl already. I have good business sense as I was a finance manager I don't have a job right now, so this could count against me. Skills - C++ with quantlib, monte carlo simulation, binomial probabilities, stochastic calculus, C++ integration with Excel, writing DLLs <-- 5 yoe doing this - Python: Pandas/Seaborn/Numpy etc <-- only 6 months applying this as a side job ("stretch assignment") - SQL / ETL / Snowflake - Tableau/ Looker dashboarding Also: - MBA top 10 - experience with people management (but happy to join as IC) The problem is I haven't done any of more serious analysis since 7 years ago and it wasn't exactly "data science" per se... If not too late, anybody could help me with the process by giving tips? TC: 0
Never too old to do anything. Whether or not it's a good move is a different question.
Not too late at all. Sharpen up SQL and Python and if you have good business/product sense you will be able to interview for data science analytics roles Good luck
If you want to, you can.
Data Science is pretty easy to break into relative to SWE/Consulting/IB. If you were able to break into IB, you can get a DS job IMO. I am a senior data scientist at McK and got the role with 2 internships and less than 1 YOE
may i reach out to get some guidance on what to learn? I'm not starting from zero, so I think I'll ask some specific questions
are data scientists paid well in McK
Yeah certainly it’s just a matter of you getting experience
Why data science?
Do you wanna be hired as an exec or a data scientist? You have an MBA so I would think you'd wanna join as a manager
perhaps? I have experience developing people
The only issue that I foresee is tech is always evolving, and it's just not worth it to keep up ya know?
You are in the best possible position for someone wanting to change careers. Just keep applying, nothing is ever too late. DM for PayPal referral, and… Your investment banking TC or gtfo
I used to earn $500k on good years.. 250k on bad years. I used to joke that on average I was right 55% of the time on my bets. the extra 5% against the coin toss is what kept my job running for 5 years lol anyway yeah, bad years 250k ... good years 500k+
You worked in Quant Investment Bank, why it’s hard to break into Data Science? And why did you switch from Quant to Corp Finance?
You have enough qualifications. Perhaps more fit to PM track than IC
Yes, too old to learn new things.
Don't give these kind of statements. One is never too old to learn something new. I learned salesforce at 40. OP can learn in 2 to 3 months and get a well paying job. He did MBA from top 10 universities
My bad I gave from my personal experience. I guess everyone is different
