I quit eBay 2 months back due to mental health issues. I had worked at ebay only for 6 months before that and hence wasn't eligible for FMLA. I am now trying to get back into the market. I need some advice on how to frame this short stint at ebay and then a gap of 2 months. I am thinking of coming out straight and telling what happened. Will that be stupid? How should I handle this? 6 yoe, $0
Double down on it and go for a short/long trip to some place. Come back and then say I wanted to take time off for travelling a little bit before starting next job. This has worked for me earlier and tbh it’s just one HR who’s going to judge you on this, just try to slide this answer under the rug (as in answer it without really coming off as insecure) as if it doesn’t matter to you as much.
Got it. Yeah I feel like I won't be getting much screens anytime soon, so might as well squeeze in a trip. 😊
Unfortunately you had to quit suddenly due to an unexpected family health event that required your full attention and wouldn't you know it?- while you were attending to this personal family health matter you had time to take a step back from your work and really reevaluate your career priorities and aspirations. After careful consideration you decided to step away from your role at eBay in order to pursue roles that would better take advantage of your level of experience and your interest. With the family health matter resolved, and with a few recruiter conversations in play, you thought it might be a good moment to get a bucket list trip in before you commit your full attention to the next endeavor
This is great and.. so crisp 😊😊 thanks
What org? I’m a few months in and considering the same tbh. It’s a mess here
How messy is it? Can you share about the seller org?
This is precisely why you should take an FMLA when still an Amazonian before becoming an ex-Amazonian. The cat has been out of the bag, at FAANG, you're actually allowed a 26w of an LOA at a 60% STDI pay to work on your mental health, so, it's worth taking even if you're not on a visa. With the latest round of layoffs, several people have even managed to take over 6mo, it seems, up to a whole year.
I’ve been there. Never say “mental health”. A couple questions before I answer though, what was your role, and what were you doing before eBay and how long were you there?
5.5 years at Amazon, senior Applied researcher.
Ok same thing happened to me. Burnt out from Amazon and went to new role. Performed terribly, burnt out. I felt terrible bc new boss and new company were really nice. I took almost a full year off. I said I needed time to reevaluate what kind of work I was doing and what motivated me about the new company. I highlighted that I exercised, traveled, learned new skills (took 2 classes at the university). Honestly, once I was in the interview no one cared, but it was getting interviews that was hard.
