If you could start your career over, would you go into fintech (quant firms or anything stock market related) or into the typical tech companies. Where can you make more money? Where do you have a better WLB? (Big thing for me) Where is there better career growth? Pls give details For reference I’m an EE and getting a masters in CS #tech #finance
Plaid is a good product. Brex pays well.
Fintech usually pays better. Regular tech will give you better WLB. There are exceptions of course on both sides.
Thank you!
Albertsons…no more discussion about it!!
Pay is generally on par with "regular tech". Especially with IPOs like Upstart. Fintech way better WLB if it's late stage or already public listed. Bolt has a 4 day week. Fintech has higher growth for now but might not be sustained growth. Lots of hype and investments in the sector but may not go on forever.
FYI, the OP was talking about HF, not true fintech, work when using the term “fintech”. Still, it is interesting to hear that Bolt has a four-day work week. Fintech is definitely a hot sector, probably THE hottest sector in the startup world at the moment.
Yeah I wouldn't consider HFs to be fintech. But I do see that possibly changing as some HFs have been selling software products : https://www.venn.twosigma.com/
Fintech is not quant and hedge fund work. That term will confuse people. Quant and hedge fund work will give you the highest compensation, but the WLB is often terrible for at least the first few years. Regular tech can still pay very well, though not as well, and usually has better or much better WLB. More than anything, the poll is going to tell you whether those answering prefer higher pay or better WLB.
I thought fintech was pretty much anything like banks or hedge funds and stock market related companies. Could you elaborate so i can edit and I’m curious also
Of course, you can use the term however you want, but fintech usually refers to the consumer side of things or B2B products. The focus of fintech is usually on the delivery of financial systems, making them more open, accessible, or intuitive. You have to be revolutionizing the financial sector. Plaid, for example, is a fintech company. Citadel is not usually referred to as a fintech organization. Optimizing trading strategies is not usually referred to as fintech. Working at a bank in the tech department also is not usually referred to as fintech, unless you are working on a novel product. Also, FYI, working as a technologist at a hedge fund, especially as a quant, usually pays quite a bit more than regular tech. Working as a technologist at a bank usually pays less than regular tech, sometimes/often with worse WLB than regular tech, with less respect from the company and more red tape. The worst of any of HF, tech, and bank tech is bank tech, in every way.
