Fire is for losers

I keep seeing posts about FIRE as though the point of life is to make enough money and do something you love that doesn’t provide any value to the world. Why are folks obsessed with giving away their youth in exchange for time when you’re old and exhausted and have familial responsibilities? Shouldn’t the ultimate goal be to liberate yourself through doing something you love that provides value for others and helps you make money? I’m sick of these fire posts and all the dumb investment advice. Here’s some investment advice: go do what you love and get good at it.

To each their own bro

Agreed. Some people sacrifice everything to the FIRE god, they make sure you know about it, and they make sure you know it’s the “right” path to walk in life.

Right? I’m totally confused by this post

You almost always give up something pursuing Fire. It’s years of crazy work instead of living life and not climbing the corporate ladder aggressively. Sorry it’s confusingly worded.

You are contradicting yourself. To "go do what you love and get good at it" you need enough money to be not worried about daily needs. Some people want to do something that they love and which will not make big bucks or any money at all.

This post makes no sense at all.

🤣 You can FIRE and not give away your life. It’s possible to have both happiness and $$$. Some people are extreme.

I like problem solving, I guess you don’t

True. If it is limited to fi I think it’s a good idea. Besides intelligent and periodic investing it is not good to obsess about it frequently

1) There isn't a magical way for people to even know what they love, let alone do it. I would argue most of the world's population has not really been successful in figuring out something they truly love. 2) Even if they did, most of the world does not have the luxury of pursuing a non-traditional career because of their financial circumstances. I might love painting but if I grew up broke and need basic money to meet a minimum lifestyle I can't paint for a living. 3) Pursuing something is almost innate human behaviour. And maybe for many people FIRE is something they love pursuing. Maybe your fundamental message is something I agree with, i.e. destinations aren't particularly satisfying so the best way is to make sure you are happy and have fun along the way. But one has to be pretty privileged or delusional to not see that it is often a luxury that's not easy for a lot of people to pursue.

Spending 9-5 plus an hour on either side to get ready and commute for most of your prime years is not for losers. Go figure.

Airbnb iejwnn Nov 16, 2023

What do you do in your prime years? Because we all are losers.

I’d rather spend my time with my kids than making someone else rich.

Are you really that good of an employee that you’re making loads of cash for your employer

Morgan Stanley mahi-mahi Nov 16, 2023

Yep, well into 8 figures. I’m literally a trader, so pnl is pretty easy to measure.
