My friend got fired from Google as he didn't want to return to the office. The dude is super smart and works on some cool technologies and will easily find another gig. The first time, he told them that his circumstances dictate that he work from home and didn't show up post RTO. When management doubled down that he RTO, he told them to eff off which got him the boot. Weird that Google would insist on folks RTO'ing. Moreover if you can do your work from the comfort of your home without any dip in efficiency, why should Google be so anal? Do you know of anyone who got fired because they failed to turn up in person?

How long do you usually read every day?
one day boomers would be dead and the RTO debate would disappear
Millennials also love offices. It’s the zoomers and genXers who abhor forced socialization
as a millennial, neither me nor my friends really care for office theatre. sell the offices
Sounds like your friend just had a micromanager. I show up a few times a month and no issues
How hard is to switch teams at Google?
Tbh sounds like OP's friend (and perhaps OP too) was a bit of a jackass, probably hard to work with even if talented, and so this was the excuse to let them go. I haven't seen RTO strictly enforced for SWEs at all.
RTO is for 2 reasons (none of which are improved collaboration or whatever the fuck) 1. A way to do silent layoffs (prob in your friends case) 2. Company realizes they’re losing money (on paying for empty spaces) or value in their commercial real estate investments, or the city is pressuring the company due to businesses around the offices suffering.
When Google provides free food, businesses around offices have nothing to lose anyway.
There are plenty of 100% remote companies that you can go to. They might not pay 500k TC but sometimes I feel like people want the Bay Area salary without actually living in the Bay Area.
Bay area salary without actually living in the bay area is the goal!
Yeah living in the Bay Area was not great at all 👎
Rto=layoffs at FAMNG
What FAMNG stands for?
Firefighters Always Munch Nutmeg Grahams
Can you share geography and team details if possible?
Must be a strange org, because they could just click a few buttons to officially become remote. For l4+ swe it is almost always approved. I bet they were fired for the f u part.
:grumpycat: good
I haven’t even met a manager tracking RTO let alone denying folks the option to be remote. Must of been a strange org indeed.
Two options here are both true: RTO is regressive AND employers have the upper hand due to market conditions. Lately it seems like employers are eager to trim their engineering spend without using the word "layoff" so they're using RTO non-compliance as a way of achieving that.
Seems odd, still haven't stepped foot in an office since 2020
Such a unique story.
Thanks bro
rto = micromanagement
In larger scale big tech, is Meta the best place for WFH?
From the outside I never liked Larry, but well done on this one.
