I was terminated last year from BigTech. Will I ever get another job in another BigTech company? Not a layoff. Terminated for moonlighting. Lack of judgment on my part. Trying to move past this but the events still haunt me till this day. Not looking for sympathy. Rather, advice on how to approach job search and background checks in the future. I have big ambitions and don’t want to be an IC forever. I’m hoping this doesn’t prevent me from becoming a manager —> Director in the future. EDIT: I won’t be sharing how my employer found out. And for everyone who is doing this, please be careful. Employers are getting very savvy. I was careless in one area (even though I was very careful with everything else). If you want to chat privately, please DM me.

How did you reach THIS conclusion of all things?
Bro what
Nothing special to do. You just move on and interview. Come up with a valid reason why you left. Background checks barely say anything beyond your title and dates.
I got let go 8 days into a job bc "someone told them" about something that happened after I was let go from my previous employer... So Bs as they claimed it was not someone from my previous employ but it so obviously was...
@amazon. Wtf are you trying to say. Sounds like a riddle. Lol
No industry-wide blacklist that I know of, and this would’nt show up in background checks as long as no charges were filed (unlikely charges would be filed unless this was some vindictive place). How long have you been looking? Why do you think this will be an issue? Also, glad you see it was poor judgement versus trying to justify it. Learn and move on.
'Charges' could never have been fired anyway. It's a breach of contract, not the law.
I think companies like LexisNexis maintain a system of people that have been blacklisted, but it's usually when someone partakes in fraud etc.
You were moonlighting? Ie a second job you were hiding? That’s so strange, I’m curious why you would do that.
I’m going to guess for $ but not sure
Overemployed. com - this is happening more often nowadays
What is moonlighting?
Working at a second job.
From Google: have a second job, typically secretly and at night, in addition to one's regular employment.
If anything it shows how hard working you are and that new employers should treat you seriously when negotiating TC!
Thanks. This is positive :) but yeah it was super hard work. Sincerely felt like I had 3 jobs during the beginning of the pandemic.
This is BS and your are just trying to make OP feel better. If OP is hardworking, then they should be working hard at the job they signed for. In no way does this look good. OP I doubt this would impact getting jobs at other big tech. Just don’t do it again and don’t mention it
Who fired you for having a second job? Was the second job a conflict of interest with the first job?
Honestly I think the conflict of interest question is the most important one. If you're moonlighting for a competitor or passing off trade secrets, that's a major integrity issue. But if you're doing a few hours of consulting each week in an unrelated field and your employer had a policy against such behavior, that's not as big of a deal—assuming you've learned from the experience. If your employer didn't have a policy against it and you got fired for this, I wouldn't give this a second thought.
Say your Mom had cancer and you needed the money. You're like Walter White, but with C++ instead of meth.
Just found out my mom has stg 4 cancer.. Sarcoma… this joke hurt me personally.
I’m sorry man
How did they find out?
This — we need details
Looks like OP made a bunch of people nervous
