Just wondering how/what Uber first few days are like. Is there an onboarding that you go through with other new hires?
you get flogged in the men’s restroom
Nah we just throw you off Sapesforcr Tower these days
sapesforcr 🤔
Assuming you're in US or Canada they'll fly you to sf for Uberversity where they give you an overview of their different lines of business and orgs and why they matter. Each team may also have their own further onboarding process.
Looks like you attended one today!
I attended one recently yes
I attended Uberversity in India this time. It's a great way to know about various business functions. I highly recommend it.
Uberversity doesn't happen straight away. You'll usually have been there for at least a couple of months by the time you go. Engucation is straight away. Then intro to your team, and then an overwhelming stream of product and engineering documents, which are each 20-50 pages and link out to several more documents like that. It's understood that getting up to speed takes months though, so just work away at it, ask questions, and you'll eventually get there, even if it starts off feeling insurmountable.
For UBer SF, here was my process 1) on day one, you go to a 1/2 day HR orientation for ‘nUbers’ at the 555 office. 2) if you are a non engineer, you manager comes to pick you up and presumably guides you through a role specific orientation 3) if you are an engineer, you go through a 4 day long engineering Onboarding to setup your laptop and learn about engineering + tooling at Uber. This is general, not role specific. During this time, your manager will come meet you for lunch. 4) if you are a mobile engineer, you go through a final day called mobile Engucation to learn about mobile dev + the presidio architecture, Uber’s cross platform engineering pattern called RIBs and our other mobile specific tooling. 5) you join your team on Friday and commence working Couple of things to note: Uber only onboards people on the first and third Monday of every month. You’ll need to pick one of those as a start date Uber also holds a program Uberversity. It happens every couple of months, and you are encouraged to sign up for a session within your first 2 months of hiring (though when I went many people had been there for longer) Uberversity is hosted in SF and features new hires from all over the US and Canada. It’s quite informative, but the real fun I found was meeting a bunch of new people. The sessions themselves varied in terms of usefulness, but I met a ton of cool people at the happy hour. You will need to clear time with your manager for Uberversity — when you go is probably decided by your role & team. My manager encouraged me to go sooner rather than later, so I signed up for the next available session in August (it just concluded yesterday) Overall, I would say that the Uber Onboarding process is a bit chaotic and didn’t really fully prepare me for my role as a mobile engineer, but I really enjoyed the experience, and the hectic nature of a company like Uber is kind of why I joined in the first place. It’s never boring here, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first six weeks at the company thus far.
Thank you for be detailed response I appreciate it a lot. I’ll be joining as a mobile engineer too and this basically tells me everything I need to know
Awesome! Glad to have you with us :)

Real talk: in what way private schools are better than public in nyc?
Yep! You go through onboarding tailored to your business function. If you're an engineer, there's three days of "Engucation" where you'll setup your dev environment and learn about some cool tools we have here.
