I’ve been a software dev/tester at IBM for 5+ years straight outta college and just got hit with the devastating news…. I got an OK severance but now I’m panicking as I fell into the comfy trap of not having grinder LC or even applying anywhere ever since college….. I tried the past two days at LC and realized how f***d I am…. Don’t know what to do…. Help 😭 😭 #layoffs
Plenty of jobs don't ask fresh college CS questions
There are also ton of companies out there that don't do LC, there's a huge list on GitHub somewhere, go find it
Leetcode more and remember when you get comfortable, it's the beginning of the end.
You're young. From your post, I assume you're <30. You still have the luxury of learning things hyper fast, and the luxury of having an income without having to work, albeit for a short time. Buy Cracking the Coding Interview (or whatever is the most recommended today), the System Design Interview, read both cover to cover, and do A LOT of LC and A LOT of mock interviews. You will be fine.
1. Start a budget now, if you don't have one. You need to be able to stretch your severance. 2. Check your state regs, and sign up for unemployment. Many allow you to collect unemployment even if you have a severance. 3. Spend a little of that severance on a resume writer who specializes in tech resumes. 4. Relax and focus on you and where you want to go, what your ideal job looks like etc. 5. Start networking and talking to others who've interviewed recently to find out exactly what you should be working on, practicing, etc. It'll be okay, you'll get another job.
A guy created resume with chatGPT for each job description and got calls from every single company he applied.
So basically put the entire job description into the chatGPT and ask it to create the resume?
Find jobs that do not require leetcode style questions.
Don’t stress, OP. You need to keep your head in the game. Sign up for unemployment and practice LC. It’s just repetitive crap anyway, you will get the hang of it with enough practice put in.
This is your chance to try something else other than a software testing role at IBM. Maybe you needed this nudge to get you out of your comfort zone.
This is 100% true and the way I’ve been looking at it.

OP, sorry to hear that. Don’t stress, it is not your fault. Take a step back , recalibrate your career, you have ample time and the entire life ahead of you. You will come out of this.
