Recruiter reached out for a MLE role E5. I value WLB and don’t mind working a few extra hours every now and then when needed, but definitely not into 996 or regular 10-12h days. How bad is WLB for MLE roles at fb for an E5? Is it 10-12h days regularly like most folks claim here?
40 hours is fine in most teams. Ask about long hours before you join the team
I don’t understand what does it mean to have bad WLB (work >40 hrs a week). No one is pointing a gun to your head and chaining you to your chair to do your job. Not a troll, just don’t get it quite frankly.

It’s not about having someone forcing you to do anything. But if you lose your job if that’s not the case the the result is the same ;)
45h/w us kinda normal.
When I speak to bootcampers they generally beat around the bush by saying things like "I don't mind putting in effort but I want to understand what the hours expectations are". It doesn't help because you're not being clear. Someone might interpret that as you willing to put in long hours I would rather have someone tell me clearly that "my priority is to not work more than 40 hours a week. I don't mind stretching once in a while but I don't want to do it regularly." Also be clear in your mind if you'd like to sacrifice promotions for wlb. People want to have good wlb but compare themselves to people that are growing faster working longer hours (and getting more done). It's possible to grow fast without putting in more hours but you have to be extremely judicious with how you use your time. I made an explicit choice to not go beyond E6 because I don't want more responsibility and I want work to be relaxed and enjoyable.
Hey I’m about to join bootcamp soon as an overlevelled E5. Is it okay to straight up admit I don’t wanna exceed 40hrs? Even with “just” 40hrs of work expected from me, I will probably have to work 50+ because I gamed the interview process and now feel imposter syndrome.
I wouldn't quantify it as 40 hours, or you might come across as someone who measures work in hours rather than output. Just say you don't want to work long hours. That's totally fine. No reasons needed. Find a mentor within FB once you start so that you are working on the right things instead of more things
YoE and TC? You might not actually get E5 FYI, they can downlevel you. I started not long ago but my feeling is WLB isn't necessarily that bad as a MLE. Compared to LinkedIn though, you probably have to do more work.
Hard to generalize, different people focus on different things.
Go for it
