EdX courses and certs

Are those edX online certificates worth anything when applying for jobs (like MITx or Harvard's CS50 cert) or only phds from those big name schools count for anything. I was looking at an AI cert from ColumbiaX because I want to learn more about the topic but not sure if would pay for the cert if I can still get the lectures and material for free. Their selling point for paying to get the certificates is that it's 25% of a masters degree at Columbia that I'll never complete because I'm in Seattle working for Amazon and cannot attend the rest of the classes in NY...I'll go through the lectures anyways but just wondering if the $1500 or so to get certified is an investment or a scam?

Certs are not worth anything, but that cs50x course is gold if you are looking to get into programming. It’s tough (as an intro to programming) but the lack of hand wavy-ness and the “better figure it out” exercises accurately represent the kind of things you will have to be able to do as an SWE.
