With the pressure of bills and the tightening job market, with this pressure I feel I am slowly crawling into a depressive state. I’ve been drinking more and sleeping in more. Even with a 10 month nest egg I feel like I’ve lost all my momentum and I am going backwards. Was this relatable to anyone that’s been laid off or just feels stagnant? How did you keep a level head so you could bounce back and keep steady towards your goals? YOE: 4 #engineering #software #swe
Get a day job while you look for something else.. Even if it's for just 2-3 days a week. It will do wonders on your self esteem and you'll do more than you believe..
Get into a solid routine. Go for a hike every morning. Shower, get dressed, lc, work on a side project.
Shower, get dressed - this is good advice. Makes you establish a routine as you had when you were working. Fool your brain into thinking it’s business as usual
Get out of the house, force yourself. Exercise. Don’t let yourself spiral down. Talk to friends/family, don’t stay siloed. It’s very hard but got to do it for your sanity.
you realize the US is not the only place in the world right?
It’s kind of cheesy but I’ve been reading “The Obstacle is the Way” by Ryan Holliday and I actually find it helpful for adjusting my attitude. Being laid off is an opportunity if you turn it into one. I saw the layoffs coming for a while and it trapped me in a state of fear and anxiety. Once I was laid off it was actually kind of a relief. Now I’m brushing up on a bunch of topics and practicing for interviews. I’m making myself a better candidate because I have no other choice. Layoffs can be good for focus in that way. I’d encourage you to find a routine you can stick to and do something every day that gets you closer to a new role.
Work out
Sports and hobbies.
Hmmm. That is lethargy. Nothing to do with layoff.
Find your source of happiness elsewhere. Talk to good friends ( not like my friends, who told me, everyone got laid off not just you and it is difficult to find a job anywhere not just developers)
Find something that brings you joy which is not coding and tech. Invest time in it everyday. Exercise and take walks and breaks regularly. Ensure you have a routine even if it feels terrible at first. Intertia is challenging. Also limit the time on blind, it will depress you to no end.
