Neurosurgeons can make so much more like $500-700k+ out of medical school while you probably won’t reach that until you have 10-15+ YOE. Why not just become a doctor? Or are you not smart enough and have to settle for a tech job?
There is the opportunity cost of not earning much while in med school and also the huge expenses involved.
Still, they earn like 300-500k out of the gate, and increases to 800-900k+ in under 10 years of experience so that makes up for the years they missed out in med school of not earning
Maybe. But it might still be a close call when accounting for the huge debt vs investing early earnings. Also, if you are smart enough and work as hard as a developer as a medical student, i would think income should still rise rapidly.
TC or GTFO
Let’s not forget the 500k debt they start out with, stupid work life balance and zero change of environment for your entire career Also - only tech is making young billionaires these days. How many billionaire doctors do you know?
You can’t become a millionaire in tech by working a 9-5... and what percentage of people in tech become billionaires vs % of doctors that make 500k+? Even compare what % of people in tech ever reach TC of 200k+. Outside of Silicon Valley, almost none but doctors everywhere make a ton
Like you just land in Bay Area and become b/millionaires! Why work? Do you know how many doctors and lawyers are angel investors, giving to the VC funds?
4 years of undergrad med school 4 years of grad med school 8 years of residency Then you become a licensed neurosurgeon Unlike you do a 3 months bootcamp and grind 3 months LC and get 200K salary at FAANG Plus, I’d rather make 100k less hiring/firing engineers as a director at FAANG than operating on a human 🧠
Wow, 6 month total grind time and hired by FAANG vs a decade+ learning to save lives. Admirable to optimize for TC, unfortunate to measure your happiness in life accordingly.
Sigh, Lawrence Livermore willfully derailing the thread... OP is clearly replying to the prompt in the thread and LL decides to change the value system
Becoming a neurosurgeon is pretty hard and the "lesser" specialties make about the same as SWE anyway. I'd say TC-wise the difficulty is about the same.
Doing neurosurgery sounds stressful as fuck
Too old to start a brand new career
Op you a desi?
Oath r u 1?
Isn’t it obvious penpen you another desi lol
Biology dissections were gross enough - I can only imagine how queasy I’d get during surgery. That said, I don’t care about TC all that much.
Want that tc, but don't want that busy life
Lol but people at places like amazon get low TC and work as much as doctors would
so... don't work for amazon?
