I’m in my late 20s and have kept in shape for most of my life. I’ve noticed people older than me tend to care about fitness less even if they used to exercise a lot when they were younger. What was the transition point? Kids? Stressful job? Injury? Just losing interest?
Define “very fit”. 90+% of people never were
I’m hoping the question self-selects for people who considered themselves “very fit.” It’s hard to define though, as a marathon runner who runs for hours every week vs a power lifter have different criteria.
I was fit, macular for a short time(6-8 months) due to my rigorous workout routine. Got a girlfriend then, which led to me stopping working out due to lack of time, gained 10kg. Lockdown happened gained 10kg more. Started working out again recently, hopefully will be back in shape in next 5-6 months.
Crazy work schedule and lots of injuries
What kind of injuries
It’s a bit of biology too, you tend to get fat sooner the older you get. So the same diet and exercise that kept you relatively in shape in your 20s, won’t suffice to keep you in shape in your 30s or 40s! You have to eat less or exercise more and most people realize when they’ve already added weight and don’t have the time or energy to exercise more.
True to an extent. The problem is that many people eat and train poorly when young. Those that learn how to train and eat properly in the beginning have less issues staying "fit" at an older age. This is assuming the true "fit" person does not suffer from major illness and/or injury as they age.
Essentially a second kid and COVID closing down the climbing gym. Even if the climbing gyms were open, it's hard to get time away from the young ones. Pre 2nd kid was about 160-165lbs. Max rep pullups was around 26. Now I'm hovering around 175-180lbs, can crank out 15 pullups max rep on a good day.
Soccer and football injuries to my hips and knees in my 30s led to three joint replacements and +25lbs in the last 2 years. But, pain free for first time in 25 years too, so there’s that. 😀
Moving to the US was the first transition point. Covid was second. Now I am a fat ass. I was fit few years ago.
Amazon happened.
Masters degree on top of work, dog, prepping for new job. Started taking T to get it back so we shall see. Plus the older I’ve gotten the less I’ve cared about keeping in shape other than health.
Mostly kids and lack of time mixed with a bit more nagging injuries. I still workout 5-6 times a week but plan on hitting it harder/longer again once the kids are older. It’s tough to find extra alone time when they are not self sufficient. It also takes more work to stay in shape the older you get, so just maintaining what you did in your early 20s isn’t good enough for your late 30s.
