Absurdities of the Bay Area 😒
I want to work for a long time at a company and have a stable job, but here is my trajectory. 1) Company 1: pipped after 6 months and asked to resign after 1 year forcefully 2) Company 2: Laid off (roughly about 2 years) 3) Company 3: Not pipped but faced a lot of mental harassment from my manager. it felt that the company didn't have a pip culture but the manager wanted me out so they resorted to it. left roughly about 2 years) 4) Company 4: being managed out, roughly at 2 years again.. Every company/manager I worked for mentioned that it had nothing to do with my work/knowledge/tech skills but my communication skills. I am still working on them and have improved significantly since my first job. However, I feel disheartened because I don't naturally have any soft skills. I really even have to learn stupid things that come to people naturally, like what to say/share with your manager and what not, and how to communicate sideways, upwards. I don't know when things I say as matter of fact could be misinterpreted by others. It is not like I wanted to leave, but I am just not wired that way to understand these things naturally. Not sure if someone else is going through this or it is just me. I know I have ADHD but I can't survive any job it seems. TC: 270k 7 yoe
Welcome to my life. I’ve had 4 jobs each averaging 1 year. Job 1: Told my performance wasn’t up to standard after 1 year. I improved but decided to quit from stress Job 2: great but only lasted a few months due to big tech offer Job 3 (big tech): good at first but I was underleveled and abused for work while others were promoted. Eventually they started with threats of firing me to make me do even more work. So I started looking. <1.5 years. Job 4: good so far now 1 year in Sounds like you are lucky lasting 2 years on average. However job hopping is insanely beneficial economically so it’s not all bad.
didn't see from that perspective.. thanks for sharing
If you have diagnosed ADHD have you reported it to HR as a disability? ADA should give you more protection and make it harder to PIP you without due cause that is documented.
Don't they just not hire people with ADHD? AFAIK corps see people with mental health as a liability.
Everyone knows. And given enough documentation it doesnt matter
2 years is above average tenure I think.
yeah. It's not even considered a job hop, its a long tenure these days
Curious what is average tenure
How did you stay in first company for a year after they piped you in 6 months
If 4 companies all had issues with your communication, work on your communication. Ask where you're not meeting expectations and commit to improving that. Otherwise it will just happen again at the 5th place
I have this problem too, except half my jobs end in layoffs. I would very much like a longer tenure.
You should seek several types of help to find out what the underlying issue is. It could be just bad luck, it could be something fixable, or just some kind of disability that companies need to help you succeed. Good luck.
I have had exactly the same problem. Don't suck up to my boss. Take no BS from people who are just resting and vesting at the company. Idiot directors who don't understand basic company business and strategy. I think I'm fine Keeping hopping, you'll learn things for sure, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you.
And sometimes maybe it’s not your fault per se, just that you are an easier prey for abuse because of your neurodiversity. Need to learn strategies to prevent these types of attacks.
Have you been assessed for autism? From the little you’ve said, it sounds like you may have more going on than just ADHD.
not yet. But I am also scared to know what they would discover.
Curious how do you get tested for autism
